ATLANTA, Ga. — Fresh off its first win of the season and one of its strongest defensive performances in recent memory, Morehouse College returns to B.T. Harvey Stadium on Saturday, Sept. 26, to host Edward Waters University in a Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference matchup. Saturday will also serve as Senior Day and Military Appreciation Day for the Maroon Tigers. Morehouse enters the weekend 1-3 overall and 1-2 in SIAC play, while Edward Waters comes to Atlanta at 3-1 overall and 2-0 in the conference.
Morehouse Looks to Build on Breakthrough Win
The Maroon Tigers enter Saturday with momentum after a dominant 44-0 road victory over Lane College last weekend. Morehouse controlled the game on both sides of the football, recording its first victory of the Brad Sherrod era while producing its best all-around performance of the young season. The win improved Morehouse to 1-3 and gave the Maroon Tigers their first SIAC victory of 2026.
Through four games, Morehouse is averaging 342.3 yards of total offense per game, including 156.5 rushing yards and 185.8 passing yards. The Maroon Tigers have scored 11 rushing touchdowns, establishing the ground game as one of the offense's most consistent weapons.
Senior running back Chase DeVaughn leads Morehouse with 270 rushing yards on 52 carries and three touchdowns. Savion Red has added 126 yards and leads the team with five rushing touchdowns, while Tony Roberson III has rushed for 106 yards. Quarterback Miles Scott has completed 59 of 110 passes for 688 yards and a touchdown this season. Jeremiah Gibson leads the receiving corps with 233 yards on 12 receptions, while Noah Rhodes has nine catches for 134 yards and the team's lone receiving touchdown. Scott also continues his climb through the Morehouse record book. The senior enters Saturday with 5,330 career passing yards, placing him second on the program's all-time list and 333 yards away from surpassing Jimmie Davis' school record of 5,662.
Takeaways Fuel Morehouse Defense
Morehouse's defense has become increasingly disruptive through the first month of the season. The Maroon Tigers have intercepted seven passes through four games, with Joziah Campbell leading the team with three interceptions. Markevious Yancie has two picks, while Jordan Woods and Joshua Houston have one each. Linebacker Sean Johnson leads Morehouse with 33 total tackles and four tackles for loss. Defensive lineman Jordan Williams has 19 tackles, 3.5 tackles for loss and 1.5 sacks. That defense will face one of its toughest challenges of the season against an Edward Waters offense averaging 36.8 points and 389.8 yards per game.
Scouting Edward Waters
Edward Waters enters Saturday riding a two-game winning streak in conference play after victories over Miles and Savannah State.
The Tigers defeated Savannah State 55-30 last weekend behind an explosive passing performance. Quarterback Tavion Faulk threw for 422 yards and five touchdowns as Edward Waters piled up 519 yards of offense. For the season, Faulk has thrown for 1,118 yards and 12 touchdowns, completing 68 of 117 passes. His primary target has been Izaiah Jean-Baptiste, who enters Saturday with 24 receptions for 448 yards and seven touchdowns. Xavier Irvin has added 203 receiving yards and two scores, while Jayden Pressey has 134 yards and two touchdowns. The Tigers have been considerably more productive through the air than on the ground, averaging 293.3 passing yards per game compared with 96.5 rushing yards.
Defensively, linebacker Trevon French leads Edward Waters with 49 tackles through four games.
A Series with Recent Drama
Morehouse leads the all-time series 8-6 through the 2025 season. Edward Waters, however, has won the last five meetings since Morehouse's 26-20 victory in 2019.
Last year's matchup produced one of Morehouse's most dramatic finishes of the season. The Maroon Tigers trailed 14-0 before rallying to tie the game at halftime. Morehouse eventually took its first lead, 24-20, on a 49-yard Nicholas Woodford touchdown run with 7:05 remaining. Edward Waters responded with a lengthy final drive. After penalties backed the Tigers into a third-and-26, quarterback Noah Bodden connected with Jean-Baptiste for the go-ahead touchdown with 1:46 remaining. Morehouse still had one final opportunity, taking possession at the Edward Waters 35 following a long kickoff return and a facemask penalty, but the Tigers held on for a 27-24 victory.
Saturday marks the first meeting between the programs in Atlanta since 2022.
What to Watch
One of the game's biggest matchups will be the Morehouse secondary against Edward Waters' explosive passing attack. The Maroon Tigers have already generated seven interceptions, while Edward Waters has thrown 13 touchdown passes and averages nearly 300 yards per game through the air.
Offensively, Morehouse will look to lean on a rushing attack that has produced 11 touchdowns. Sustaining drives could also help keep Faulk and the EWU offense on the sideline. Turnovers could again prove critical. Morehouse is coming off a five-takeaway performance at Lane, while its ability to convert those opportunities into points could play a major role Saturday.
Finishing drives will be equally important. Morehouse has scored on 12 of 17 red-zone possessions this season, including 10 touchdowns, while Edward Waters has scored on 12 of 15 trips inside the red zone. For Morehouse, Saturday presents an opportunity to carry momentum from its first victory back home, honor its senior class and earn another important conference win against an Edward Waters team that has established itself as one of the SIAC's most productive offenses through the opening month.
