ATLANTA, Ga. — Morehouse College football hits the road for the first time in Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference play Saturday, Sept. 19, when the Maroon Tigers travel to Jackson, Tennessee, to face Lane College at Lane Field. Kickoff is scheduled for 5 p.m. ET (4 p.m. CT). Morehouse enters the matchup 0-3 overall and 0-2 in SIAC play, while Lane is 0-3 overall and 0-1 in conference action.
Both teams will be looking to turn the page following conference losses last weekend. Morehouse fell 49-21 to Central State at B.T. Harvey Stadium, while Lane dropped a 43-7 decision to Allen at Lane Field.
Last Time Out
Morehouse showed fight late against Central State, scoring twice in the fourth quarter and producing 148 yards and 10 first downs over the final 15 minutes.
The Maroon Tigers finished the afternoon with 318 yards of total offense, including 180 on the ground. Savion Red rushed for two touchdowns, scoring from 11 and six yards, while Tony Roberson III added a 19-yard touchdown run. Defensively, Joshua Houston recorded an interception to stop a Central State scoring threat.
Through three games, Morehouse is averaging 347.3 yards of total offense per game, with 145.3 coming on the ground and 202.0 through the air. The Maroon Tigers have rushed for eight touchdowns this season.
Morehouse Leaders Through Three Games
The Maroon Tigers have received production from multiple players in the offensive backfield. Chase DeVaughn leads Morehouse with 153 rushing yards and two touchdowns on 37 attempts. Roberson follows with 102 yards and a score, while quarterback PJ Hatter has added 76 rushing yards. Red has rushed for 75 yards and leads the team with three rushing touchdowns.
Through the air, senior quarterback Miles Scott has completed 48 of 88 passes for 551 yards. Jeremiah Gibson has emerged as Morehouse's leading receiver with 10 catches for 211 yards and a team-best 21.1 yards per reception. Eric Stephens has 10 receptions for 96 yards, while Dylan Brooks and Gavin Fletcher have each recorded 52 receiving yards.
Defensively, linebacker Sean Johnson continues to lead the Maroon Tigers with 26 total tackles and three tackles for loss. Defensive lineman Jordan Williams has recorded 16 tackles, a team-high 3.5 tackles for loss and 1.5 sacks, while Dylan Robinson is third on the team with 11 tackles.
Scouting Lane
Lane has also started the season 0-3, opening with a 16-3 loss at Bethel before falling 34-0 at Alabama State and 43-7 against Allen. The Dragons are averaging 215.0 yards of total offense per game, including 119.0 rushing and 96.0 passing. Lane has scored 10 points through its first three games. Despite last week's final score, Lane showed signs of offensive improvement against Allen. The Dragons finished with 301 yards, including 188 rushing yards, and averaged 5.9 yards per play. Lane also forced two turnovers.
Running back John Christian III is a player Morehouse will have to account for. Christian leads Lane with 186 rushing yards on 34 attempts and is averaging 5.5 yards per carry. He broke loose for runs of 44 and 35 yards against Allen and finished the game with 130 rushing yards. Quarterback Cameron Shepherd provided Lane's biggest passing play of the season last week, connecting with Antonio Welch for a 67-yard fourth-quarter touchdown. Shepherd has thrown for 113 yards and one touchdown this season, while Welch leads the Dragons with 78 receiving yards.
Defensively, Maxwell Jean-Louis leads Lane with 18 tackles, followed by Cadarius Newcomb with 16 and Cameron Toney with 15. Newcomb has recorded three tackles for loss.
Last Meeting
Morehouse controlled last season's meeting, defeating Lane 31-7 during Homecoming at B.T. Harvey Stadium. Scott completed 21 of 32 passes for 313 yards and three touchdowns as the Maroon Tigers earned their third consecutive victory. Morehouse's defense limited Lane to just 56 passing yards and intercepted two passes. The victory was part of a three-game Morehouse winning streak that included victories over Tuskegee, Central State and Lane.
Keys to the Game
For Morehouse, establishing the run early could again be important. The Maroon Tigers have produced 436 rushing yards and eight rushing touchdowns through three games, while DeVaughn, Roberson and Red give Morehouse multiple options out of the backfield.
Defensively, containing Christian and forcing Lane into obvious passing situations could allow Morehouse's front seven to become a bigger factor. Lane has relied more heavily on its rushing attack, and the Dragons have completed 24 of 58 passes with three interceptions through three games.
Morehouse will also look to turn sustained possessions into points. The Maroon Tigers have reached the red zone 12 times this season and scored on eight of those trips, including seven touchdowns. Morehouse has also converted eight of nine fourth-down attempts. With both programs searching for their first win and valuable SIAC positioning at stake, Saturday's matchup gives Morehouse an opportunity to build on the offensive flashes it showed late against Central State and carry momentum into the second half of September.
