Morehouse Basketball's Championship Revival Ranked No. 22 on BCSN's Top HBCU Sports Stories of the Year

BCSN highlighted Dixon's success as a first-time head coach who immediately delivered championship results

ATLANTA, GA | Morehouse College men's basketball earned national recognition this week as the Maroon Tigers' remarkable 2025-26 season under first-year head coach Larry Dixon was ranked the No. 22 HBCU sports story of the year by the Black College Sports Network (BCSN) during Sunday's edition of BCSN SportsWrap.

The ranking was the first installment of BCSN's annual countdown of the Top 25 HBCU sports stories of the year. The network unveiled stories No. 21 through No. 25 during Sunday's show and will continue revealing five stories each week leading up to the announcement of the No. 1 story during the July 5 show.

Dixon's debut season at Morehouse quickly became one of the most compelling stories in Black college athletics. In his first season as a collegiate head coach, he guided a ten-game winning streak, led the Maroon Tigers to the SIAC Men's Basketball Tournament Championship, ending a 23-year conference tournament title drought and guiding Morehouse to its first NCAA Division II Tournament appearance since 2018, earning National Coach of the Year honors by HBCU All-Stars. Dixon set a program record for wins by a first-year coach at 22.

The championship run energized the Morehouse community and restored the program to prominence within the SIAC while establishing Dixon as one of the breakout coaching stories of the year.

"This recognition reflects the tremendous effort of our student-athletes, coaches, and support staff throughout the season," said Dixon. "We set out to build a championship culture, and our team embraced that challenge from day one. To see our accomplishments recognized on a national platform is a credit to everyone associated with Morehouse basketball."

Morehouse Director of Athletics Harold Ellis said the recognition underscores the significance of the program's achievements during the 2025-26 season.

"Being recognized nationally among the top stories in HBCU sports is a tremendous honor for our basketball program and our institution," Ellis said. "Coach Dixon and our student-athletes represented Morehouse with excellence throughout the year. This recognition reflects not only a championship season but also the commitment, resilience, and leadership that define Morehouse athletics."

BCSN highlighted Dixon's success as a first-time head coach who immediately delivered championship results while helping return one of the SIAC's most historic programs to the NCAA Tournament.

The recognition adds another milestone to a season that rekindled excitement around Morehouse basketball and positioned the Maroon Tigers for continued success in the years ahead. For up-to-date athletic information on the Maroon Tigers, follow them on social media or online at www.morehouseathletics.com or Maroon Tiger basketball on Instagram @morehousebasketball.
