Historic Season Ends in Overtime Loss

Box Score March 10, 2018 -- ATLANTA -- The #1 Morehouse Maroon Tigers squandered a 21-point second-half lead and lost, 98-97, in overtime, to the #8 Florida Southern Moccasins. The loss knocked the Maroon Tigers out of the NCAA Division II South Region Tournament, which Morehouse (25-3) was hosting for the first time ever. 

The defeat spoiled a career-high 26 points by forward James Walker and ends the collegiate career of senior Tyrius Walker, the SIAC Player of the Year, and one of the most accomplished players in Morehouse history.

Florida Southern (21-10) advances to the South Region semifinals and will face the winner of the Valdosta State-Eckerd game.

In his final game as a Maroon Tiger, Tyrius Walker showed his best, scoring 23 points, handing out nine assists, grabbing five rebounds and collecting a steal and a block. 

James Walker had his best scoring game, hitting 10 of 18 shots, including 6 of 10 from beyond the arc. He added eight rebounds and two steals to his stats line. 

Senior Jordan Wallace, playing in his last Morehouse game, also went out swinging. Wallace, sank 5 of 7 three-pointers, for 15 points, to go with two rebounds and two assists. 

Before one of the largest crowds of the season, Wallace, Jordan and Keyshaun Jacobs were raining threes on the Moccasins. The scoring onslaught led to a 46-35 halftime lead and a 62-41 margin, with 14:33 remaining in regulation. Then the wheels came off. 

The Mocs battled back for a 45-24 run, to tie the score for the first time and send the game into overtime. 

Omar Alston hit 3 of 5 shots, for six points, but his big contribution was a game-high 16 rebounds. Tying his season high, Alston had twice as many rebounds as any single Moccasin player. He also handed out three assists. 

Junior Tony Evans hit 5 of 8 shots, for 10 points, and grabbed three rebounds.  

Six Moccasins posted double figures, led by Jonathan Lawton, with 29 points. Lawton scored eight of his team's 12 overtime points.

Morehouse ends a spectacular season, in which the team thrilled its fans with a school-record 18-game winning streak. For several weeks, the Maroon Tigers held steady at #1 in the NCAA South Region and reached as high as #6 nationally, before settling for #10, in the season's final poll. 

In addition to Walker as the SIAC Player of the Year, head coach Grady Brewer was voted the SIAC Coach of the Year.
