Box Score January 20, 2018 – ATLANTA -- The Maroon Tigers won the battle of the top two teams in the SIAC, with an 86-75 win over the Claflin University Panthers.
The win extended the Maroon Tigers' record-breaking win streak to 16 games and solidified the Tigers as the Number One team in the SIAC East Division.
Nearly 5,000 fans attended the biggest game of the season, which also featured the House of Funk Marching Band and Mahogany N Motion.
Morehouse led from wire to wire, in the most up tempo game so far this season. The first half was close, as the Maroon Tigers took a 36-33 halftime lead over the Panthers, who came in on a 16-game win streak.
The second half was a different story. The Maroon Tigers came out firing and went on an 18-4 run, to extend the lead to 19 points. After that, the Tigers put it on cruise control the rest of the way.
Tyrius Walker led all scorers with 29 points. The team captain hit 9 of 15 shots from the field, including 4 of 8 triples. Playing a team-high 34 minutes, Walker added three assists and two rebounds.
Co-Captain Martravious Little matched his second best scoring of the season, with 20 points. Little sank 7 of 10 shots and scored 14 points in the second half. He chipped in six rebounds.
Newcomer James Walker had his best game as a Maroon Tiger, pouring in 16 points and grabbing a game-high nine rebounds. Walker scored 11 of his points in the second half, during the Tigers' scoring outburst, which broke the game open. In addition to hustle and energy plays, Walker hit 5 of 8 shots and was 3 of 4 from beyond the arc.
Jordan Wallace scored seven of his nine points from the free-throw line. He chipped in a team-high four assists.
Omar Alston contributed six points, seven rebounds, three assists, two steals and a block.
Three Panthers posted double figures. Austin Lawton and Benjamin Williams each had 14 points. Jaleel Charles added 12 points.
Claflin, 10-1 in the conference, will visit Clark Atlanta, Monday.
The Maroon Tigers will take on another SIAC East Division rival, Monday, at 7 p.m., when the Benedict Tigers (15-4; 8-4) roll into Forbes Arena. Benedict lost at Clark Atlanta, 78-75, Saturday.
