Box Score January 7, 2017 – ATLANTA – Morehouse broke a three-game losing streak, with a 72-57 win over the visiting Marauders of Central State University.
The Maroon Tigers fell behind early in the first half and trailed by 10 points. With hot shooting by Omar Alston and Duby Maduegbunam, the Tigers rallied for a 36-31 first half lead.
Morehouse came out of the locker room even hotter and extended the lead to 61-39 midway through the second half, before putting the game onto cruise control.
The Marauders shot a better percentage from the floor – 45-41 – but Morehouse won the game with rebounding and defense. The Tigers beat the Marauders on the boards, 43-30, and forced 27 turnovers, while committing only 11 miscues of their own.
Alston had a career day, leading all players in points, with 19, rebounds, with 12, and steals, with seven. The 6-6 sophomore from Waldorf, MD, scored 13 of his points in the first half.
Maduegbunam had his second big game in two days. The 6-5 forward hit 6 of 13 shots for 17 points, to go with four rebounds and two assists. On Thursday, he posted 14 points and nine rebounds.
Rounding into form after missing the first semester, Ayinde Russell hit 5 of 8 shots, including three threes, for 17 points.
Martravious Little chipped in 12 points and two rebounds.
Morehouse, which had lost, 86-83, to Kentucky State, Thursday, moved up to 7-5; 2-3. Central State, on a six-game losing streak slid to 5-9; 2-5. The Marauders lost, 88-75, to Clark Atlanta, Thursday.
Markese McGuire led the Marauders, with 15 points and four rebounds. Frank Barber III added 13 points and nine rebounds.
Morehouse is off until Saturday, when they host the Fort State University Wildcats, at 3 p.m.
