Box Score March 7, 2015 – BIRMINGHAM, AL – Morehouse came close, but fell short, in the semifinals of the SIAC Basketball Tournament, losing to arch-rival Benedict, 60-58.
Except for a brief spell in the first half when 12 turnovers led to a 14-point deficit, the Maroon Tigers kept it close. Even after trailing by double-digits, Morehouse rallied to close the gap to 29-27, at the half.
The second half was just like the first. Benedict came out hot and kept the Maroon Tigers at bay. Trailing by a couple of points for most of the second period, the Maroon Tigers didn't gain a lead until a three-pointer by Javarius Gay put them ahead by a point with 2:02 left.
Benedict quickly regained the lead and Morehouse was forced to foul to stop the clock, but to no avail. Benedict hit their free throws and held on in the waning seconds.
SIAC Freshman of the Year Tyrius Walker tied for the game-high, with 20 points, and added six rebounds five assists and four steals.
Javarius Gay chipped in 12 points, as did Robert Askew, who also added 10 rebounds.
Benedict's Jordan Smith hit five three-pointers in the first half, and six overall, to finish with 20 points.
#4E Benedict advanced to the title game and will face #1W Lane which upset #1E Paine in the first semifinal.
East Division rivals Morehouse and Benedict met twice this season, with each winning on the other team's home court. Benedict won 66-60, at Forbes Arena. Morehouse won 68-57, in Columbia, SC.
