Box Score February 26, 2015 – AUGUSTA, GA – In a rematch of the two top teams in the SIAC, Morehouse lost, 89-71, to the Paine College Lions.
The first meeting, in Forbes Arena, on January 29, saw Morehouse winning, 62-61, and halting a 14-game Paine win streak.
Because the brackets are already set, today's game could be viewed as merely a warm-up for the SIAC tournament, which begins Monday, at the Birmingham (AL) Crossplex.
Head Coach Grady L. Brewer saw the game as a way to rest some of his top players and give his reserves some playing time. He played 14 players an average of 14 minutes.
Tyrone Brown set the tone, with 12 points and a game-high nine rebounds, in 22 minutes. Brown hit 5 of 9 shots and both his free-throws and helped the Maroon Tigers to a 42-32 rebounding advantage.
Brandon Glover came off the bench and scored a season-high 13 points, on 5 of 9 shooting, including 3 of 6 from beyond the arc. Michael Scott chipped in 9 points and Robert Askew added eight points and five rebounds.
Apparently looking to add to their #4 South Region ranking, avenge the loss at Forbes Arena and celebrate Senior Night, Paine shortened its rotation. Denzel Dillingham, the SIAC leading scorer, played a full 35 minutes and added 32 points to his conference-leading stats. Two other Lions posted double figures.
Morehouse and Paine, which are in opposite halves of the bracket, could meet again in the SIAC tournament title game, March 7, at 7 p.m.
Paine, with the conference's best record (22-5; 17-2) is the #1 overall seed and the #1 team in the East. Morehouse (15-11; 13-6), with the second-best record, is the #2E seed. Both teams received a bye in the first round.
Morehouse will play Thursday, at 7:45 p.m., against the winner of the #3W Tuskegee/#6E Albany State game. Paine will play Wednesday against the winner of #4W LeMoyne-Owen/#5E Clark Atlanta.
