February 16, 2013 – AUGUSTA, GA – After winning 14 consecutive games, the Maroon Tigers have now lost two straight, both by seven points. Saturday's loss came at the hands of the Paine College Lions, a team Morehouse had beaten by seven points, on January 28.
There wasn't much scoring in the first half. Both teams shot under 37 percent and the period ended in a 26-26 tie.
The second half was a different ballgame, as the action and the shooting percentages soared. Morehouse out-shot Paine 57 percent to 50 percent and the Lions out-rebounded the Tigers, 16-13.
The big difference in the game was at the free-throw line, where Paine hit 32 of 40 shots and Morehouse sank 20-of-32. In the game's final minute, the Lions hit 11 consecutive free throws.
Four Maroon Tigers posted double figures, led by Darrius Williams, with 16 points. Williams, the SIAC scoring leader and second leading rebounder, had an off night on the boards, pulling down only four rebounds and handing out three assists.
Andrae Nelson, who is tied with Williams for second in SIAC rebounding, also had four rebounds, to go with seven points and two blocks.
Malcolm Frank reached season highs in scoring and rebounding with 14 points and six boards. Frank, the defensive floor general, hit 5-of-7 shots and two free throws, for his first double-digit scoring of the season.
Shawn Allen and Austin Anderson each scored 12 points and Allen had a game-high seven rebounds. Jonathan Tassin chipped in six points and six rebounds.
Mario Jordan and Jerel Stephenson tied for game high scoring, with 17 points each, and helped the Lions move to 12-12 (10-6 SIAC).
Morehouse, whose historic win streak was halted by a 77-70 loss to Benedict, on Thursday, fell to 15-7 (13-2 SIAC).
The Maroon Tigers return to Forbes Arena, Monday, at 7:30 p.m., to face the Wildcats of Fort Valley State University. Morehouse beat FVSU 66-62, January 31.
