Maroon Tigers 2012-13

Streak at Seven for Red-Hot Maroon Tigers

January 17, 2013 – ATLANTA – The streak continues for the red-hot Maroon Tigers who claimed their seventh straight game, with a 69-59 win over the visiting Kentucky State University Thorobreds.

Darrius Williams, who connected on 9-of-15 shots, had game-highs in points (20) and rebounds (8).

Despite being outrebounded 36-34 and shooting only 43 percent from the free-throw line, Morehouse led from end to end and moved to 8-5. Kentucky State fell to 6-7 (4-3 SIAC).

Morehouse's biggest lead was 11 points, in each half, but several times the Thorobreds closed to within three, only to see the Tigers sprint ahead.

Williams got plenty of scoring help from Austin Anderson, with 10 points, and Andrae Nelson, with 11. Nelson also grabbed six rebounds and handed out three assists, to lead all players.

Perhaps the biggest surprise of the season, Williams is among the SIAC leaders in scoring and field goal percentage. Williams, who played sparingly in the 2010-11 season, sat out last year to focus on football. He was an All-SIAC cornerback on a Morehouse team that had a stellar run into the NCAA playoffs.

Williams has scored in double figures in 12-of-13 games and reached the 20-point mark five times this season, including a team-high 33 points against Stillman, on January 7. He is also the team leader in minutes played, averaging 31 minutes per game.

Michael Ziegler didn't play long, but when he did he made it count. Coming off the bench for one of his most productive games, Ziegler hit 4-of-5 shots, for eight points and pulled down four rebounds, in only eight minutes of play. In 11 games this season, Ziegler had scored total 10 points.

Malcolm Frank added eight points, three rebounds and two steals.

Darquell Pulliam, with 17 points, and Troy Adams, with 15, were the big men for the Thorobreds. John Gaston had nine points and a team-high seven rebounds.

For a team that started the season at 1-5, the Tigers are on a remarkable run and have now beaten every team in the SIAC West Division.

The only unbeaten team in the conference, Morehouse sits atop the SIAC East Division, at 6-0. Prior to the season, conference coaches projected Morehouse to finish fifth in the East.

In addition, Morehouse has already matched the win total of last season's 8-19 record.

Morehouse travels to Orangeburg, SC, Monday, at 7:30 p.m., to tangle with the Claflin University Panthers 5-9 (3-3 SIAC). The Tigers return to Forbes Arena, January 26, to play reigning SIAC champion Benedict, at 3:30 p.m.
