Maroon Tigers Hold Off Wildcats

| By:
February 7, 2012 -- ATLANTA -- The Maroon Tigers surrendered the better part of a 24-point second-half lead, but held on to win, 80-74, over the Fort Valley State Wildcats.

Morehouse jumped out early and led by double digits most of the way, until a late surge of hot shooting and forced turnovers by the Wildcats closed the gap. By the time the Wildcats rallied the lead was insurmountable.

The game was a far cry from the 74-65 loss in the Valley last week, when the Tigers played without big man Andrae Nelson and the Wildcat guards had their way in the paint.

This time Nelson, who had 17 points and 10 rebounds, blocked three shots and altered several others, to make his presence felt in a big way on the inside.

Shawn Allen scored 26 points and grabbed 12 rebounds, to lead all players in both categories. Allen sank 8-of-17 from the field and 9-of-13 from the charity stripe, for his second-highest total this season.

Daniyal Faquir chipped in 12 points. Faquir and teammate Gerald Dunn each hit 6-of-6 free throws to help the Tigers to 82 percent from the line, the highest percentage this season.

Adam Callaway (6 pts, 3 rebs, 4 assists) and Cornez Nesbitt (6 pts, 4 rebs) contributed to the Morehouse victory.

Four Wildcats scored in double figures, led by Joshua Davis, with 16.

Morehouse returns to action, Thursday, 7:30 p.m., against the Albany State Golden Rams.
