February 13, 2012 – ATLANTA – Andrae Nelson scored a career high and Morehouse season high and led the Maroon Tigers to an 83-77 win over the Tuskegee Golden Tigers.
Nelson hit 14-of-20 shots – most of them dunks – for 31 points. He combined that with 10 rebounds, four assists, two blocks and a steal, for his best game ever as a Maroon Tiger.
After trading the lead for most of the first half, Morehouse settled for a 41-38 advantage at the break.
In the second half, it was all Maroon Tigers, who led by as many as 13 points, with eight minutes remaining. A surge by the Golden Tigers closed the gap to 80-77, but three Morehouse free throws put the game on ice.
Shawn Allen had 28 points and eight rebounds, for his best scoring of the season. Allen hit 9-of-14 shots from the field and 10-of-14 from the line. The SIAC's third leading scorer, at 17.9 ppg, added eight rebounds, five steals and two assists.
The 32-of-58 shooting by the Maroon Tigers represented a season-high 55 percent.
Daniyal Faquir and Mario Farris contributed eight points each. Cornez Nesbitt chipped in six points and Adam Callaway tied with Faquir for a game-high six assists.
The previous Morehouse season high was 28 points by Daniyal Faquir against LeMoyne-Owen, January 9.
Calvin Thomas, who hit 10-of-20 shots, including 6-of-10 from beyond the arc, led Tuskegee with 29 points. Derrick White had a game-high 14 rebounds for Tuskegee, which fell to 19-9 (13-7 SIAC).
Morehouse will face the LeMoyne-Owen Magicians, Wednesday, 7:30 p.m., in the next to last home game of the season. The Maroon Tigers beat the Magicians, 56-51, in Memphis, January 9.
