Maroon Tigers' Rally Falls Short Against Vikings

| By:
December 1, 2012 – ATLANTA – After falling behind by 14 points in the second half, the Maroon Tigers rallied for a brief lead in the final 18 seconds, only to lose, 79-76, to the Elizabeth City State University Vikings.

After four straight free throws by the Vikings, the Maroon Tigers had a chance to tie the game, but a desperation heave by Darrius Williams went into then out of the basket.

Morehouse had other chances to tie the game down the stretch, but twice missed the front end of one-and-one free throw attempts.

The comeback was fueled by a fired up Morehouse defense and hot shooting, mostly by guard Austin Anderson.

In the final 10 minutes, the Maroon Tigers forced five turnovers and Anderson scored all of his 13 points, in the second half.

Anderson's biggest contribution was a four-point play that came on a three-pointer and free-throw. The rare four-pointer gave Morehouse its first lead of the second half, with 1:18 remaining.

Nelson also had a big second half, scoring 12 of his team-high 18 points, to go with eight rebounds.

Darrius Williams contributed 12 points, eight rebounds, four steals and an assist. Raphael Walker chipped in nine points and two each of assists, rebounds and steals.

Cornez Nesbitt scored seven points and grabbed five rebounds and Malcolm Frank added six points.

ECSU got big scoring from Angelo Sharpless, with 25 points, and Deon Rice with 21 points, which helped the Vikings move to 5-1.

Morehouse fell to 1-4 and will face another CIAA opponent, Saturday, at 3:30 p.m., when the Livingstone College Blue Bears visit Forbes Arena.
