Morehouse Loses to Benedict

February 3, 2011—ATLANTA – In a carbon copy of a game two weeks ago, the Maroon Tigers battled back from a double-digit deficit only to fall short, when a potentially game-tying three-pointer clanked off the rim, and Morehouse fell to the Benedict College Tigers, 72-69.

After committing nine of their 11 turnovers and shooting only 36 percent in the first half, the Maroon Tigers trailed by 12 at the break, against the SIAC's leading team. Early in the second half, the futility continued and the deficit ballooned to 17.

The tide turned midway through the second period, when Morehouse outscored the visitors 12-4 in a five-minute span. The teams traded baskets for a stretch then Morehouse surged again and cut the lead to two points. Benedict continued to hit their shots and the Maroon Tigers were forced to throw up a desperation three-pointer as the buzzer sounded.

As in a similar game against Tuskegee 10 days ago, Jonathan Tassin had to force an errant triple that barely missed. Tassin finished with seven points and five rebounds.

Roderick Williams scored 11 of his team-high17 points in the second half, to help fuel the comeback. He also had five rebounds and two steals. Mario Farris provided some spark for Morehouse, with five points and four rebounds, all in the second half.

Joshiah Anabraba (12 pts.) and Jelani Figures (14 pts.) helped carry the scoring load for the Maroon Tigers who dropped to 6-9 (6-7 SIAC).

Newcomer Dana Kendrid pulled down a team-high seven rebounds. Morehouse led in that department 41-35.

Four Benedict Tigers scored in double figures, led by Marcus Goode. Listed at 6'-10" Goode had game highs in points (19) and rebounds (10). Benedict improved to 13-5 (13-3 SIAC).

The Maroon Tigers will go on the road for three games, before returning home for a rematch against the Clark Atlanta Panthers, February 12, at 3 p.m.
