February 10, 2011 – ALBANY, GA – #Daniyal Faquir# poured in a Morehouse season-high 34 points and the Maroon Tigers knocked off the Albany State University Golden Rams, 70-64.
Faquir hit 11-of-17 shots, including 7-of-11 three-pointers. The sophomore transfer from Pasadena, CA hit all five of his free throws and grabbed four rebounds.
Faquir scored 17 points in the first half and led Morehouse to a 32-25 half-time lead.
In the second half, the Maroon Tigers built a 14-point lead, which they held until the 4:40 mark. Then in a flashback that looked like “déjà vu all over again,” the Golden Rams rallied to close the gap to three points, with under a minute to play.
Five times this season, including a Tuesday loss at Fort Valley, the Tigers held big, second-half leads, yet managed to lose or barely escape. In a similar game, the Tigers beat the Rams, 83-82, on January 29.
Despite the drama, the Tigers held on, for their second road win. With 19 seconds remaining and up by three points, Faquir scored five straight. He hit a three-pointer then a layup, off of a steal and an assist by #Malcolm Frank#.
The Tigers improved to 8-10 (8-8 SIAC). With nine games remaining, Morehouse is assured of a better record than last year's 7-20.
#Dana Kendrid# scored eight points and hauled in five rebounds. #Adam Callaway#, Malcolm Frank and #Andrae Nelson# each added six points. #Shawn Allen# chipped in five points and a game-high eight rebounds.
The 34 points by Faquir were the most by any Tiger since #Jelani Figures# scored 36 against Clark Atlanta, in January 2010.
Three Rams scored in double figures, led by Marcus Benitez, with 24 points. Albany State fell to 6-17 (6-12 SIAC).
The Maroon Tigers return to action at Forbes Arena, Saturday, at 3 p.m., for a rematch against The Clark Atlanta Panthers.
General admission is $10. Morehouse and Spelman students, faculty and staff are admitted free.
