ATLANTA, GA | Under the leadership of Head Coach Edgar Evans, the Morehouse College Golf team took significant steps forward in the 2024–25 academic year, showing promise on the course while upholding the institution's tradition of academic excellence. With a roster filled with young talent, the Maroon Tigers demonstrated both competitive grit and classroom discipline, closing the season with major strides in performance and accolades.
On the Course: Historic Progress and a Tournament Victory
Entering the season with a renewed focus, the Maroon Tigers embraced their motto — "They may be young, but they are ready." That mindset translated into tangible progress throughout the spring campaign.
-
Tiger Invitational (Savannah, GA, Mar. 10–11): In one of their first big tests of the season, Morehouse secured a 4th-place finish at the rain-shortened Tiger Invitational. Tyler Stackhouse (Antioch, IL) and Joel "J.D." Cunningham (Halifax, VA) led the way with top-10 individual finishes, placing 8th and 9th respectively.
-
Lemoyne-Owen Magicians Golf Classic (Tunica, MS, Mar. 16–17): The team celebrated a milestone victory — their first tournament win under Coach Evans. Morehouse posted a team score of 654, outpacing Central State, Lemoyne-Owen, and Fisk. Cunningham once again starred individually, finishing in a tie for second place. Four Maroon Tigers finished in the top 10, showcasing the program's growing depth.
-
SIAC Championship (Parris, KY, Apr. 21–23): Morehouse battled tough conditions in Kentucky to close out the year with a 4th-place finish at the SIAC Championship, marking a 116-stroke improvement from the 2024 tournament. Cunningham shot a tournament-best 75 in the final round, helping the team post their lowest round of the event. The result reinforced the program's upward trajectory and set the foundation for what promises to be an even stronger 2025–26 season.
In the Classroom: Setting the Standard
Morehouse Golf wasn't just strong on the greens — it also excelled in the classroom.
Five members of the golf team were honored on the SIAC Commissioner's All-Academic Team for earning a GPA of 3.4 or higher:
-
Yusouf Gladney – Biology, 3.95 GPA
-
Tyler Stackhouse – Biology, 3.75 GPA
-
Kip Banks – Economics, 3.71 GPA
-
Joel "J.D." Cunningham – Communication Studies, 3.71 GPA
