FORT WASHINGTON, Md. — Morehouse College Athletics was well represented Friday, June 12, as alumni, supporters and friends of the College gathered for the 2026 Morehouse Golf Foundation Charity Tournament at National Golf Club in the Washington, D.C. area.
The charity golf tournament, sponsored by the alumni association, served as a fundraiser in support of the Morehouse Golf program, continuing a long-standing alumni-driven tradition of using the game of golf to create opportunity, build community and provide meaningful support for Morehouse students and student-athletes.
Representing Morehouse Athletics at the event were Director of Athletics
Harold Ellis, Morehouse Golf Head Coach
Edgar Evans and Morehouse Basketball Head Coach
Larry Dixon. Their attendance reflected the department's continued commitment to strengthening relationships with alumni and supporters whose generosity directly impacts the student-athlete experience.
"The support of our alumni association means everything to Morehouse Athletics," Ellis said. "When our alumni come together in this way, they are doing more than supporting a golf tournament — they are investing in our programs, our student-athletes and the future of Morehouse College. Their commitment helps create opportunities for our young men to compete, graduate and lead, and we are grateful for the continued support they provide to Morehouse Athletics."
This year's tournament also came on the heels of a strong season for the Morehouse Golf team. The Maroon Tigers finished third in the conference and placed second at the PGA WORKS Collegiate Championship, finishing as the top HBCU in the NCAA Division II division. The team's success added additional momentum to the fundraising effort and highlighted the continued growth of the program under Evans' leadership.
The Morehouse Golf Classic tradition dates back to the early 1980s, when alumni envisioned a charitable tournament that would bring Morehouse men together through fellowship while raising support for students in need. The first benefit tournament was held in 1984, and the event was later revived in 2011 with renewed focus and expanded support from alumni in the Baltimore and Washington, D.C. area.
Since its revival, the Classic has grown into a signature fundraising effort, with events hosted in both the DMV and Atlanta. The initiative has helped generate scholarship support for deserving Morehouse students while also creating a space for alumni, civic leaders, sponsors and supporters to remain connected to the College's mission.
The Morehouse Golf Foundation has placed a renewed emphasis on raising scholarship funds for golf team members and supporting the long-term growth of the program. Those efforts align with the vision of building a stronger foundation for current and future Maroon Tigers through improved resources, expanded development opportunities and continued alumni engagement.
For Evans, the event represented another step in elevating Morehouse Golf while honoring the legacy of those who have used the sport as a vehicle for mentorship and advancement.
The presence of Dixon, who recently led Morehouse Basketball to a championship season in his first year at the helm, further underscored the unity across Morehouse Athletics and the department's shared commitment to supporting one another beyond competition.
"This is how programs grow," Ellis said. "They grow through vision, through partnership and through people who believe in the mission. We are thankful for every golfer, sponsor, donor and alumnus who made this event possible and who continues to stand with Morehouse Athletics."
As Morehouse Athletics continues to build momentum across its programs, events like the Morehouse Golf Foundation Charity Tournament provide a reminder that the strength of the Maroon Tigers extends well beyond campus. It lives in the commitment of alumni, the leadership of coaches and administrators, and the continued investment in Morehouse men.
