ATLANTA, GA | The SIAC office announced today that
Zach Underwood (Montgomery, AL, Catholic HS) has been chosen as the conference's Newcomer of the Week for games played on Saturday, October 11. Underwood was the most disruptive defender on the field, creating takeaways and negative plays that directly shaped the outcome in a one-score game. Underwood contributed 9 tackles, 1.5 sacks, 2 forced fumbles. He anchored a front that produced four sacks, three fumble recoveries, and a defensive score; his consistent pressure collapsed the pocket and flipped field position. Underwood delivered multiple drive-killing plays in the second half, including a sack and strip that halted CSU's rally. The victory secured Morehouse's second straight win — the program's first back-to-back since 2021.
Underwood is the first Maroon Tiger to receive the Newcomer award since
Amyr Smith in 2018. This also marks the second time in the past two seasons that the Maroon Tigers received conference superlatives in consecutive weeks.
Underwood, and the rest of the Maroon Tigers, not only prepare for a Homecoming match up against Lane this Saturday at 1PM at B.T. Harvey Stadium, but are also seeking their third consecutive win. The last time Morehouse football won three consecutive games was in 2021. For up-to-date athletic information on the Maroon Tigers, follow them on social media or online at
