Box Score September 23, 2017 – FAIRFIELD, AL – The Maroon Tigers came within a whisker of beating Miles College, but a fumble and a blocked punt led to two Golden Bear field goals and Morehouse fell, 27-24.
Miles got on the board first, taking the opening kickoff down the field for a 64-yard drive and a 7-0 lead.
The Maroon Tigers bounced right back, with a scoring drive of their own. Kivon Taylor connected with Ryan Edwards for a 46-yard touchdown strike, which capped a 12-play, 81-yard drive.
On their next possession, Morehouse was forced to punt, but the kick by Alex Gonzalez was blocked and recovered by the Golden Bears. The Morehouse defense held and the Golden Bears had to settle for a 24-yard field goal.
Miles struck again with 7:33 left in the first half. Li'Jon Cordier hit Trey Smith with a 39-yard touchdown pass, to put the Golden Bears ahead 17-7.
Near the end of the half, Fernando Sdelamora hit a 27-yard field goal to tighten the score at 17-10.
Miles scored again midway through the third quarter with a six-yard touchdown pass.
Early in the fourth quarter, Taylor connected again with Ryan Edwards for an eight-yard pass, to bring the score to 24-17.
A sack-fumble by Taylor once again gave the Golden Bears good field position off of a Morehouse miscue. Once again the Morehouse defense held tough and the Golden Bears had to settle for a field goal. Miles kicker Nick Christiansen hit from 40 yards.
Morehouse pulled to within three points, with 2:35 remaining. Backup quarterback Michael Sims connected on his only pass of the game to Frank Bailey Jr. who took it in from the 33-yard line.
Despite the loss, Frank Bailey Jr. was a bright spot for the Maroon Tigers. Filling in for the injured Brycen Terry, Bailey, a freshman from Atlanta, rushed for 90 yards, in addition to his touchdown catch and run.
Morehouse leads the series, which began in 1930, 24-17, but lost to Miles last year 31-7 at home.
Morehouse will host the Kentucky State University Thorobreds, Saturday, at 4 p.m.
