Box Score November 24, 2015 – ATLANTA – Ayinde Russell came off the bench to score 24 points and push Morehouse to an 87-84 win over the West Georgia Wolves.
Russell, a freshman from Tucker High School, lit it up from beyond the arc, hitting on 6 of 12 attempts. He added 4 of 5 free throws, to finish with 24 points and matched his total from the first three games.
A jumper by Michael Hall broke a 15-15 tie. After that the Maroon Tigers never trailed. Morehouse built a 14-point second-half lead, but 10 turnovers and 68 percent shooting by the Wolves cut the lead to one point, with 10 seconds remaining. The Wolves outscored the Maroon Tigers 50-41 in the second half, but Morehouse benefitted from a 46-34 halftime bulge.
With five seconds left and Morehouse nursing an 85-84 lead, Javarius Gay hit two pressure free throws to ice the game.
The win broke a six-game losing streak to the Wolves and lifted Morehouse to 4-0, the best start in more than 20 years. The last four-win start was in 1994.
West Georgia, which had averaged 105 points per game, fell to 2-2.
Four other Maroon Tigers scored in double figures.
Michael Hall had another big game, logging 37 minutes and scoring 14 points. Hall, the team leading rebounder, at 6.5 rpg, hauled in a game-high nine rebounds and swatted away three shots. Tyrone Brown pulled down six rebounds and Miodrag Minic collected eight boards, helping Morehouse to a 38-28 rebounding advantage.
Hampered by early foul trouble, Tyrius Walker played only 24 minutes, before fouling out. But the team leading scorer made every minute count, tallying 13 points, six assists, five rebounds and a steal.
Martravious Little hit 4 of 5 shots from the field and two free throws, to finish with 10 points.
Shooting 6 of 8 from the line and grabbing three rebounds, Javarius Gay finished with 10 points.
Five Wolves scored in double figures, led by Steph Branch, who scored 15 of his 24 points in the second half.
Morehouse hits the road for the next two games against conference rivals. The first is a December3 matchup at Miles and two days later at Tuskegee.
The next home game is December 12 versus Georgia College & State University.
