January 29, 2015 -- ATLANTA -- Javarius Gay hit a layup with 11 seconds left and Tyrius Walker scored 16 second-half points to lift Morehouse to a 62-61 win over the SIAC-leading Paine College Lions.

Gay's winning basket followed his rebound of a missed shot by Walker who took over the game in the final minutes. On a series of outside shots and acrobatic drives to the basket, Walker nearly single-handedly willed the Maroon Tigers to victory.

Most of Walker's points came in the later stages of the second half, including a string of eight consecutive points that cut well into Paine's double-digit lead.

On Paine last possession, Michael Hall blocked a shot in the lane by Denzel Dillingham, the conference's leading scorer. Martravious Little corralled the rebound as the clock ran out and the Morehouse faithful stormed the Forbes Arena floor, to celebrate the upset win.

Hall finished with four blocks, six points and five rebounds.

Walker finished with 21 points, five rebounds, three assists and two steals. Gay had nine points and five rebounds.

Despite trailing by 10 points at the half, the Maroon Tigers battled tooth and nail to the end.

Clawing their way back from a 14-point deficit wasn't only a confidence booster for the Maroon Tigers it was a statement win for a young team who refused to be pushed around by division rivals.

On Monday, Morehouse lost to Benedict at home, but today, the Tigers refused to fold against the Lions who entered the game on a 14-game win streak.

Gay's game-winner wasn't the only big shot during the Morehouse stretch run.

One shot was a rebound and put-back slam by freshman Martravious Little. The two-handed dunk energized the crowd and showcased the hops that helped the 6'-0" Little win a high-school dunk contest.

Another big shot was the three-pointer by Caleb Boykin, which cut the Paine lead to 61-60 with under a minute remaining.  In case the name is not familiar, it's because the freshman Boykin was playing in his first game. Boykin was added to the roster shortly before the game,
just after receiving medical clearance.

Center Robert Askew and forward Tyrone Brown combined to help Morehouse to a 46-41 rebounding advantage. Askew had a game-high nine rebounds; Brown grabbed eight boards, to go seven points. And when they got it, the Maroon Tigers took good care of the ball, turning it over only 10 times, the second lowest total of the season.

Morehouse improved to 10-7; 8-2 SIAC and remains in second place in the SIAC East Division. Paine. with its first conference loss, fell to 14-4; 10-1 SIAC, but remains atop the East.

Denzel Dillingham led the Lions with 23 points and five rebounds. Alfonso Davis added 11 points and six rebounds.

The Maroon Tigers will get another big test Saturday, when they travel down the street, to face the Clark Atlanta Panthers, at 3 p.m., in Epps Gymnasium. Despite CAU's 3-14 record, the cross-campus matchup is always a challenging game.
