Box Score September 13, 2014 -- WASHINGTON -- After scoring first on a Monqavious Johnson to Lake McGuffie touchdown pass, the Maroon Tigers failed to find any offensive rhythm and fell to the Howard University Bison 35-17, in the AT&T Nation's Football Classic.
It was the fourth consecutive loss to Howard in the renewed rivalry played at the legendary RFK Stadium. Morehouse moved to 1-1 and Howard improved to 1-2.
Morehouse had no answer for Howard quarterback Greg McGhee, last year's Mid-Eastern Atlantic Conference player of the year, who rushed for three touchdowns and passed for two more.
Shelton Hamilton, who rushed for 140 yards and two touchdowns in last week's 31-16 win over Edward Waters, was held to 25 rushing yards on nine carries.
Much of the Morehouse's offensive production was provided by the McGuffie brothers who combined for 10 catches and 172 yards. Lake McGuffie caught six passed for 101 yards and a touchdown and Lance McGuffie caught four passes for 71 yards.
The McGuffies grabbed the lion's share of the 262 passing yards put up by Johnson, who completed 22-of-39 passes and a touchdown.
Morehouse's 392 yards of offense surpassed Howard's 392 yards, but the Maroon Tigers failed to convert on 10 of 13 third-down and 3 of 4 fourth-down chances. Howard's final touchdown came late in the fourth quarter following a Morehouse fumbled punt at its own 22-yard line.
Johnson scored a 6-yard rushing touchdown late in the fourth quarter and was under heavy pressure most of the game. He was sacked three times, hurried nine times and had four passes broken up. The sophomore quarterback led the Tigers with 76 of the team's 130 rushing yards.
The other Morehouse score came on a 27 yard field goal by Alexis Gonzales late in the second quarter.
Clarence Christian spearheaded the Morehouse defensive attack, with a game-high eight tackles. Demario Dixon, the season leader in tackles, made seven stops and Emmanuel Parks recorded six tackles.
