Box Score November 1, 2014 – ATLANTA – In his first full game in nearly a month, quarterback Monqavious Johnson returned with a vengeance and led Morehouse to a 24-21 upset win over the Fort Valley State Wildcats.
Despite being sacked three times and playing on a cold and blustery night, Johnson just back from a severe ankle injury, led Morehouse in rushing and completed 14 of 31 passes for 135 yards and two touchdowns. He finished with 82 yards on 16 carries.
Not only did the come-from-behind win break a three-game losing streak, the victory guarantees that Morehouse will avoid a third straight losing season. At 5-4, and with one game remaining, the Tigers are assured of at least a .500 season.
Linebacker Lance White, who shared a sack with James Woods, spearheaded the Morehouse defensive attack that held Fort Valley to a season-low 242 yards. Woods and Brian Thomas had solo sacks. Clarence Christian and Joshua Thurston combined for 13 tackles.
Morehouse fell behind 14-0, before rallying for two touchdowns in the second quarter that narrowed the gap to 14-12. Both of those touchdowns were Johnson to Lake McGuffie receptions. The first was a 28-yard strike, at the 3:19 mark, the other, from 1 yard, with 11 seconds remaining.
MuGuffie's two touchdowns, four catches and 56 yards set the tone for the Morehouse receiving corps, which kept key drives alive with clutch third down catches. Seven Tigers combined for 14 catches and 135 yards.
The Tigers fell further behind in the third, on a 38-yard field goal by Juan Serna that put the Wildcats ahead 17-12.
Morehouse came alive in the fourth quarter with two scoring drives and two interceptions that may have saved the Maroon Tigers' season.
For the first score, Johnson orchestrated a masterful 18-play, 95-yard scoring drive that lasted 8:20. Running back Shelton Hamilton capped the drive with a 3-yard plunge into the end zone that game Morehouse an 18-17 lead. On the 2-point conversion attempt, Johnson fumbled the ball and LeRon Furr returned it 95 yards for an FVSU 2-point score, putting the Wildcats ahead 19-18.
With just under seven minutes to play, an interception by free safety Demario Dixon gave the ball back to the Tigers on their own 40 yard line. But 10 plays and 49 yards later, a go-ahead field goal attempt by Alexis Gonzales sailed wide right.
The Maroon Tigers defense stiffened on the next FVSU possession and held the Wildcats to three yards on six plays.
Hamilton's second 3-yard touchdown run capped the final Morehouse drive and put the Maroon and White up 24-19. But in a "déjà-vu all over again" moment, another fumble by Johnson and 90-plus yards return by Aaron Davis, cut the lead to 24-21.
Fort Valley got the ball back with 1:32 left and drove 30 yards in 10 plays, but an interception by Jamil Irvin-Muhammad slammed the door on the Wildcats who came into the game at 6-2 (4-1 SIAC). The loss knocked Fort Valley out of contention for the SIAC East Division title.
Morehouse will celebrate Senior Day at B.T. Harvey Stadium, Saturday, at the 2 p.m. season finale, against the Kentucky State University Thorobreds. Twelve Senior are expected to play their final game as Maroon Tigers.
