Box Score October 25, 2014 – COLUMBIA, SC – A close game through three quarters became a rout, when the Benedict College Tigers scored three times off of Morehouse turnovers and won 33-15.
The final Morehouse touchdown came in the last minute and was the result of a Benedict turnover. Quarterback Jordan Tarver ran it in from the 1-yard line.
Tarver, who started the game and alternated throughout with Monqavious Johnson, also ran in the first Morehouse touchdown late in the third quarter.
The other Morehouse score came on a 21-yard field goal by Alexis Gonzales in the third quarter.
Tarver completed 8 of 18 passes for 49 yards and an interception. Johnson, still limping from his ankle injury three weeks ago, completed 6 of 13 passes and rushed for 24 yards.
Most of the Morehouse wounds were self-inflicted. In addition to an interception and two fumbles that led to 17 fourth-quarter points, Morehouse was heavily penalized for personal fouls that resulted in two ejections.
Trying to break the Homecoming slide, Morehouse outgained Benedict 265 yards to 238, but the costly turnovers and 102 yards of penalties had the Maroon Tigers spinning their wheels.
The Morehouse yardage was even divided – 135 on the ground and 130 through the air. Shelton Hamilton claimed the larger share of the ground game, with 63 yards on 15 carries. Malik Johnson had 36 yards on 10 carries.
Devon Mann led the receiving corps with seven catches for 81 yards, including a 30-yarder.
Marcus Graham, Benedict's backup quarterback, did most of the damage for the Tigers. He threw for 146 yards and two touchdowns and rushed for a 16-yard touchdown. Kicker Tory Mimbs hit field goals of 30 and 38 yards.
Christopher Hambie and Lance White led the Morehouse tacklers, with five each.
With the third consecutive loss, Morehouse falls to 4-4 (3-3 SIAC). Benedict improves to 4-4 (2-3 SIAC).
The Maroon Tigers return home, Saturday, at 7 p.m., to face the Fort Valley State Wildcats.
