Morehouse Loses on Last-Minute Field Goal

October 26, 2013 – ATLANTA – Not even two fourth quarter touchdowns by Thomas Williams could salvage a win for Morehouse, which lost to Benedict, 29-26, on a last-minute field goal.

Williams, one of five seniors honored at the Homecoming/Senior Day, rushed for touchdowns of 3 and 9 yards, which tied the game, at 19-all, then gave the Maroon Tigers a 26-19 lead, which they failed to hold on to.

Williams set up his first score, with a 50-yard punt return, which gave Morehouse the ball at the Benedict 13-yard line.

The loss dropped Morehouse to 2-6 and guarantees the Maroon Tigers a second straight losing season.

Things didn't start out well for the Maroon Tigers, in the first quarter, when they had first-and-goal from the 6-yard line and had to settle for a 21-yard Hector Solis field goal. Then on Benedict's first play from scrimmage, Brandon Thompson connected with Maurice Griffin for a 72-yard touchdown. Eduard Hernandez missed the extra point for a 6-2 Benedict lead.

The scoring went back and forth all game, until Eduardo Hernandez hit a 22-yard field goal, with 31 seconds remaining.

Six Morehouse rushers combined for 68 yards on the ground, led by Shelton Hamilton, with 33 yards.

Unable to do much on the ground, the Maroon Tigers took to the air. Quarterback Monqavious Johnson completed 17-of-28 passes for 181 yards and a touchdown, despite being continually harassed and sacked four times.

Eight of his passes went to Lance McGuffie and Brandon Sartin who hauled in four each. McGuffie scored his first Morehouse touchdown on an 11-yard reception, at the end of the first quarter, and finished with 58 yards. Sartin had 17 total yards.

Lance White led all tacklers with 12. Richard Sanders collected nine tackles and Clarence Christian and senior Mitchell De-WALT had eight apiece.

Morehouse will travel to Fort Valley State, Saturday, at 6 p.m., to tackle the Wildcats.
