Morehouse Beats Clark Atlanta

| By:
September 29, 2012 – ATLANTA – Running back Thomas Williams scored three touchdowns, including a 95-yard kickoff return, and lifted Morehouse to a 34-16 win over Clark Atlanta.

Morehouse bounced back from a 37-34 loss to Lane at home and grabbed the first conference win of the season. The Maroon Tigers improved to 2-3 (1-1); the Panthers dropped to 1-4 (0-2).

Both teams were sluggish, in the first half, scoring only one touchdown each and missing the extra points.

After a scoreless first quarter, Williams capped a 91-yard Morehouse drive with an eight-yard run early, in the second quarter, which put Morehouse up 6-0.

The Panthers responded near the end of the quarter, with a one-yard touchdown run by quarterback Charles King.

The second half was a different story for the Maroon Tigers who scored 28 points and ran away with the game.

Williams jump started the second half scoring when he fielded the kickoff and sprinted 95 yards untouched down the left sideline, for his second touchdown of the game.

Less than a minute later, Panther wide receiver Willie Clark caught a 38-yard touchdown pass that tied the score at 13-all.

Wide receiver Darquan McCain put the Tigers up for good, when he hauled in a four-yard touchdown pass from Donnay Ragland.

Ragland was involved in the Tigers' next score on a bit of trickery that had the Morehouse offensive coaches jumping for joy on the sidelines.

The play, which resembled the old “fumblerooski,” resulted in a 48-yard touchdown run by Quendarius Hall. The touchdown was the first for the freshman running back who was filling in for David Carter and Shelton Hamilton, who sat out with injuries.

The only other Panther score was a 51-yard field goal by Austin Casillas, which set a CAU school record.

Midway through the fourth quarter, Williams capped his best day ever as a Maroon Tiger, with a three-yard touchdown run.

Ragland finished the day completing 14-of-22 passes for 148 yards and a touchdown. He also rushed for 131 yards, on 11 carries, giving him a 11.9 yards-per-carry average.

McCain caught five passes for 28 yards. Devon Mann hauled in four passes for 61 yards. Devance Harris grabbed two receptions for 18 yards and Khamarr Smith grabbed one for 22 yards.

On defense, where the Tigers have struggled, Latavius Watts led a fired up D that recorded seven sacks and held the Panthers to 13 rushing yards. Watts was all over the field and picked up a team-high 10 tackles.

Justin Oliver snagged the sole Morehouse interception and made eight tackles. Christopher Alston led the sack pack with two, to go along with eight tackles.

Morehouse will travel to Columbus, GA, Saturday at 2 p.m., to face the Tuskegee Golden Tigers. Tuskegee beat Fort Valley earlier today 49-18.
