Maroon Tigers Lose To Golden Rams

October 13, 2012 – ATLANTA – A blocked extra point was the big difference in the 16-13 Morehouse loss to the Albany State Golden Rams.

After Thomas Williams scored on a 10-yard in the second quarter, Keionten Miller blocked the Morehouse point-after attempt, scooped up the football and returned it 90 yards for a two-point score.

The three-point turnaround proved costly. The game became a defensive battle between two of the SIAC's most potent offenses and Morehouse dropped to 2-5.

Freshman Antoine Easterling scored his first Morehouse touchdown, on a six-yard run in the fourth quarter. The extra point cut the Albany State lead to 16-13.

Both Morehouse touchdowns were the result of long drives. Williams scored on a six-play 78 yard drive; Easterling scored on a 13-play 80 yard drive.

Albany State's only offensive TD was an 11-yard run by Nathan Hoyte  who finished with 101 rushing yards. Their defensive touchdown was a 38-yard interception return by Dexter Moody of a Donnay Ragland pass.

Ragland's interception was his fifth in two games. He completed 16-of-27 passes for 194 yards and rushed for a team-high 64 yards, on 17 carries.

David Carter made his first appearance in three games. He had two carries for eight yards, but returned early to the sideline to rest his ailing hamstring.

Carter's backups – Quendarius Hall, Easterling and Williams – combined for 86 yards, on 27 carries.

Devance Harris and Darquan McCain, led the Morehouse receivers, with 52 yards each. Devon Mann had four catches for 21 yards, Khamarr Smith hauled in two passes for 34 yards. Brandon Sartin had two catches for 15 yards.

As in almost every game, Brandon Houston spearheaded the Maroon Tiger defense. The team leader racked up 11 tackles, two of them for loss.

Lance White collected nine tackles and Demario Dixon had eight.

Samuel Gilmore, the SIAC's leading kick returner, had another solid game. The speedy senior returned three kickoffs for 94 yards and gave Morehouse excellent starting field position.

Morehouse will be Benedict College's Homecoming guest, Saturday, at 2 p.m., in Columbia, SC.

Benedict, which lost 14-10 at Clark Atlanta's Homecoming, is 0-7.
