September 24, 2011 – JACKSON, TN – Derrick Hector caught a 20-yard touchdown pass from Byron Ingram with two minutes remaining in the fourth quarter, to give Morehouse a 25-21 won over the Lane College Dragons.
Morehouse trailed for most of the game, including 14-10 at the half.
Running back David Carter added to his conference-leading rushing numbers, piling up 177 yards.
The Maroon Tigers got on the board first, on a Brandon Hoffman 27-yard field goal.
Lane answered with 14 points. Greg Moore caught an 11-yard touchdown pass from Alan Ferguson and Jackie Howard returned a Morehouse fumble for a 14-yard touchdown, giving the Maroon Tigers their biggest deficit of the season.
Morehouse responded, with a one-yard touchdown pass from reserve quarterback Donnay Ragland to tight end Khamarr Smith who scored his second touchdown of the season.
The only score by either team in the third quarter was a 28-yard field goal by Hoffman that tightened the score at 14-13.
In the fourth, Lane increased its lead with a one-yard touchdown run by backup quarterback McKinsley Marbury.
Trailing by eight points midway through the fourth, the Maroon Tigers put together two of their most impressive scoring drives of the season
An 18-yard touchdown pass from Ingram to DeVance Harris capped a 7-play 66-yard drive that put Morehouse within two points. The two-point attempt that would have tied the game failed, when Carter was stopped short of the goal line.
On the ensuing Lane possession, the Morehouse defense did what it has done most of the season – stepped up big.
Led by team leading tacklers Elijah Anderson, Brandon Houston, Mykel Green and Richard Sanders, Morehouse held Lane to 14 yard and forced a weak 29-yard punt.
Faced with the possibility of losing to Lane for the first time since 2006, the Morehouse coaching staff dialed up a heavy dose of rushing by Carter and Mychal Harrison who churned out 56 yards and put the Dragons on their heels. Harrison finished with 80 rushing yards.
With Lane expecting more rushing, Ingram passed to Hector who made an acrobatic catch over his defender, to the delight of the 50-plus Morehouse fans who travelled to Jackson. The dramatic last-minute reception put Morehouse ahead for the first time, since early in the first quarter.
With only 1:17 left on the clock, the Morehouse defense held again, to help the Maroon and White improve to 3-1 and drop Lane to 2-2.
Holding the Lane offense to only 14 points, the Morehouse defense applied pressure all game, forcing two fumbles – both by Darrius Williams - recording four sacks and making eight tackles for loss.
Morehouse will face Clark Atlanta, at home, Thursday, at 8 p.m., in a game televised by Comcast's CSS.
