October 29, 2011 – FORT VALLEY, GA – David Carter rushed for 351 yards and four touchdowns, powering Morehouse to a 49-12 win over the Fort Valley State University Wildcats.
Clicking on all cylinders, Morehouse scored early and often, taking a 42-12 half-time lead and cruising the rest of the way. It was the third time this season that Morehouse, #8 in the NCAA Super Region Two, has scored more than 46 points.
Carter rushed for 251yards in the first half alone, easily breaking the Morehouse single-game record of 242 yards, set by John David Washington, in 2003.
Carter's record-breaking day was set up by the Morehouse defense, which forced seven turnovers -- five interceptions and two fumbles -- and held the Wildcats to one of their lowest outputs of the season.
Cornerback Justin Oliver also had a record-tying day, intercepting Wildcat passes and leading Morehouse in tackles, with six. His three picks tied the previous record of three interceptions in one game, which is shared by five former Tigers.
Oliver turned in one of the best defensive plays of game, stripping a Wildcat receiver of the ball as he was about to cross the goal line. The fumble was recovered by safety Darrius Williams, who also collected two interceptions. Red-shirt freshman Corey Denson picked off a Wildcat pass and returned it 35 yards.
The Maroon Tigers held the Wildcats to minus-10 yards rushing, well below their 125-yards per game average.
When the final buzzer sounded, Morehouse had season-highs in rushing yards (536) and total yards (662). Mychal Harrison gained 54 yards on 17 carries. Winston Bodrick rushed seven times for 44 yards.
Thomas Williams scored his first touchdown of the season and contributed 74 all-purpose yards. He gained 12 yards rushing and had two catches for 62 yards. His 59-yard touchdown catch from Byron Ingram put Morehouse up 15-0 in the first quarter.
Ingram had his best rushing day of the season, lugging the pigskin 17 times for 75 yards and a touchdown. He connected on 6-of-15 passes for 126 yards and a touchdown.
Darquan McCain hauled in two passes for 18 yards; Derrick Hector caught one for 35 yards and Jamar Rodriguez pulled in one for 11 yards.
The Maroon Tigers did what they had to do to stay in the hunt for the SIAC East Division lead, but division leader Albany State beat Benedict earlier in the day, 37-13.
The Maroon Tigers 7-2 (5-1 SIAC) will take on the Thorobreds of Kentucky State, in Frankfort, KY, Saturday, at 1 p.m., for the season finale.
