Minority Golf Championship

Tigers Win National Tournament

May 9, 2010—Morehouse golfers pulled off a stunning 20-stroke victory, to capture the 24th Annual PGA Minority Collegiate Golf Championship this weekend.

Paced by Olajuwon Ajanaku (1-under 71) and Philip Allen (Even 72), the Maroon Tigers jumped out to an 11-stroke lead after day one.

Philip Allen, a senior from Atlanta, blistered the par-72 course, with a 72-73-69 – 214. His three-day total topped all golfers in the field and earned him the Low-Medal trophy.

The win was the most impressive victory by the best group of golfers to play at Morehouse since the College reinstated the sport in 2003. The Maroon Tigers are the two-time defending SIAC champions and have finished no lower than third in any tournament this season.

“This was a really big feather in our caps,” said Head Coach Bill Lewis. “Our guys have played well all year.”

More than 200 contestants from 50 colleges and universities comprised the championship field of the 54-hole, stroke-play Championship, which consisted of four divisions: NCAA Men's Division I and II, and NAIA Men's and Women's.

The debut broadcast of the 2010 highlight show on Golf Channel will air on Wed., July 7 at 8:00 p.m. Additional airing times are Wed., July 28 at 10:00 a.m., and Sat., July 31 at 3:30 a.m.
