Box Score March 1, 2017 – BIRMINGHAM, AL – Morehouse prevailed in the rematch of last year's SIAC tournament quarterfinals, with a 74-64 win over the Lane College Dragons.
Tyrius Walker scored 18 of his game-high 27 points in the second half.
After pulling ahead 34-32 at halftime, Morehouse maintained a slim lead throughout the second half. Duby Maduegbunam also had a big second half, scoring 10 of his 16 points after intermission.
The game didn't start well for the Tigers who fell behind 7-0, forcing coach Grady Brewer to call and early timeout.
Morehouse recovered on a good run and closed the gap.
Despite shooting only 27 percent in the first half, Morehouse edged out the Dragons, mostly on the strength of nine points by Walker, seven by Jordan Wallace and six points and eight by Duby Maduegbunam.
Three pointers by Keyshaun Jacobs and Jordan Wallace helped Morehouse stay within striking distance.
The second half began better for the Tigers. A Morehouse steal and a breakway dunk by Maduegbunam set the stage for a victory party for the small but vocal bunch of Maroon Tiger fans who made the trip from Atlanta.
Martravious Little scored 10 points, but his bigger role was to defend Terrance Bridgeman, the Lane top scorer and last season's SIAC Player of the Year. Though Bridgeman scored 23 points, most were near the end of the game and were too little too late.
Tremell Gooden also had a big part in the defensive scheme. Gooden, a little-used reserve created two turnovers that led to fast breaks and were key to the second-half momentum.
Morehouse advances to the semifinals, Friday, at 7:45 p.m. (CST), to face the winner of the #1 East Clark Atlanta Panthers and the Miles Golden Bears, who beat Albany State.
