November 10, 2017 --ATLANTA -- Five Maroon Tigers were voted to the Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference All-SIAC by the conference's football coaches and sports information directors.
Linebacker David Smith represented Morehouse on the SIAC's 1st Team and defensive linemen Bundrea Conway and Antonio Johnson, tight end Ryan Edwards and wide receiver Amyr Smith represented the 'House on the 2nd Team.
SIAC Announces 2017 Football All-Conference Teams
Fort Valley, Ga (November 10, 2017)—Junior running back, Justin Hardy of Miles, was named Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SIAC) Football Player of the Year (MVP) and Offensive Player of the Year as voted on by the leagues head coaches and sports information directors.
Senior linebacker, Osband Thompson (Tuskegee) was named Defensive Player of the Year for the second year in a row, while defensive lineman, MarQuel Shelton (Miles) was tabbed Freshman of the Year.
Junior quarterback, Slade Jarman (Fort Valley State) was named Newcomer of the Year and second-year head coach, Kevin Porter, was named Coach of the Year.
Hardy, a 5'8 junior from Homewood, Ala., led the SIAC in total rushing yards, yards per game, rushing touchdowns, total touchdowns, and scoring. The junior is No. 10 in Division II in rushing yards and had five 100-yard games and four games with more than 165 yards, including a 210-yard, three touchdown effort against Central State. The Alabama native has seven plays of more than 50 yards and three touchdowns runs of longer than 80 yards, including an SIAC-long 86-yard touchdown run against Clark Atlanta.
Osband Thompson, a senior linebacker from Miami, Fl., led the SIAC and is second in the nation in tackles with 112 on the season. The Florida native has three interceptions with one returned for a touchdown and had a season-high 16 tackles versus Albany State.
MarQuel Shelton, a 6'0 freshman defensive lineman from Bessemer, Ala., has enjoyed a dominant campaign as a true freshman where he is tied for the league lead in sacks and is tied for second in tackles for loss. His best performance came against Clark Atlanta, where he set single-game career highs in tackles (7), solo tackles (6), tackles for loss (3.5), and sacks (2.5).
Jarmon, a junior from Pensacola, Fl., led the SIAC in passing efficiency and finished second in passing average as he completed 119-of-207 passes for 1,640 yards while averaging 182.2 yards per game. The Florida native was named both Offensive Player of the Week and Newcomer of the Week.
Kevin Porter, finishing his second season with the Wildcats led them to an Eastern Divisional title with a 5-1 record. Porter finished his first season with a 5-6 record and 4-3 SIAC record, while leading the Wildcats to their 11th SIAC Championship and a win over Albany State for the Eastern Division Title. The Wildcats won in overtime, 33-30 over Kentucky State with FVSU's last championship coming in 1999. The Wildcats will meet the Golden Tigers in the championship game on Nov. 11 at 2 p.m. at Wildcat Stadium.
