March 6, 2015 – BIRMINGHAM, AL – Michael Scott sank two free throws in the final 12 seconds, to lift Morehouse to a 55-52 win over the Tuskegee Golden Tigers, in the quarterfinals of the SIAC Basketball Tournament.
Scott's clutch shooting helped #2E Morehouse advance to Saturday's semifinals against the #4E Benedict Tigers. That game is scheduled for 4:45 p.m.
East Division rivals Morehouse and Benedict have met twice this season, with each winning on the other team's home court. Benedict won 66-60, at Forbes Arena. Morehouse won 68-57, in Columbia, SC.
Morehouse led most of the game, including by nine points with 13 minutes remaining. But the Maroon Tigers hit a dry spell and went scoreless for seven minutes, while the Golden Tigers scored eight unanswered points to narrow the gap. The scoring drought turned what could have been a blowout into a nail-biter.
In the final minutes, the teams traded baskets until a three-pointer by Valdimir Tilme gave Tuskegee its first lead of the second half.
Fouled on two trips down the floor, Scott went to the line for two shots each time. But Scott, the team's best free-throw shooter, at .826, twice missed the front end of the two-shot penalty.
The misses gave Tuskegee two chances to take the lead, but the Golden Tigers committed two costly turnovers and Morehouse celebrated the victory.
Scott finished with a team-high 18 points, on 6 of 13 shooting, including four three-pointers. Four other Maroon Tigers – Robert Askew, Tyrone Brown and Tyrius Walker had eight points each. Javarius Gay had seven points, to go with five rebounds.
Tyrius Walker, the team's leading scorer and the SIAC Freshman of the Year, tallied eight points, four rebounds and three assists.
Askew led all players, with seven rebounds, and, along with Michael Hall, who had six boards, and Miodrag Minic, with five, contributed to the 43-31 Morehouse rebound advantage.
In their other meeting this season, Morehouse beat Tuskegee, 79-66, at Forbes Arena. In that game, Scott scored four points and Walker scored 17.
The tournament was delayed a full day because of bad weather. The men's and women's championship games will be played Sunday at 10 a.m. and 1 p.m. respectively.
