September 18, 2010—Byron Ingram threw for five touchdowns – three of them to Robert Darby-McNair – and Morehouse beat the Kentucky State Thorobreds, to go to 4-0 and the best start to a season since 1935.
Ingram, a 6'-5” sophomore from Atlanta, tied the Morehouse single-game record of five touchdown passes, set by Jimmie Davis, also against Kentucky State, in 1987.
In contrast to last week's 49-6 win over Lane, which featured an overwhelming ground game, Saturday's game showcased the Maroon Tigers' aerial attack.
Four touchdown passes by Ingram gave Morehouse a comfortable lead, until a one-yard KSU rushing touchdown took the halftime score to 27-7.
Ingram completed first-half touchdown passes to Jamar Rodriguez, for 41 yards, Derrick Hector, for four yards, and two to Darby-McNair, for 17 and 55 yards.
Darby-McNair's 55-yarder was a spectacular one-handed grab of a pinpoint pass, as he streaked down the left sideline. The catch capped a 96-yard scoring drive. His three touchdown catches in one game tied him for second-best in school history. James Steadman, in 2008, against Lane, and Kenneth Rodgers, in 2003, against Kentucky State, caught three passes for touchdowns.
Vance King scored Morehouse's only rushing touchdown – a three-yarder, early in the fourth quarter that pushed the score to 41-7.
Forcing four turnovers and holding the 'Breds at bay, the Morehouse defense can take equal share in this momentous win.
Giving up large chunks of real estate, but allowing no points, the Maroon Tigers stood strong when it mattered. The Thorobreds outgained the Tigers 389 yards to 361, but scored only one touchdown, until late in the fourth quarter, with the game well out of reach.
Free safety Darrius Williams hauled in the game's only interception and collected nine tackles. The sophomore from Detroit shared a sack with teammate Mykel Green, to help the Tigers record a season-high 6 sacks.
Olajawaun Gooch led the sack pack, with two. Brandon Cunningham recorded a sack, to go with eight tackles, and forced and recovered a fumble. Justin Oliver led all tacklers, with 10.
Morehouse will take on the Lincoln University Blue Tigers, Saturday, at 7 p.m. at B.T. Harvey. Morehouse defeated Lincoln 38-0, last season, in Jefferson City, MO.
