Scouts High on Harewood

March 15, 2010—Ramon Harewood took center stage at the “Morehouse Pro Day,” a showcase of local football talent, held at the Decatur High School sports facility.

The three-time All-SIAC offensive lineman commanded the attention of nearly 20 professional scouts from the National Football League who came to evaluate Morehouse's draft-eligible talent pool, in preparation for the NFL's April 22-24 draft.

Harewood attracted the interest of the pro scouts not only for his size and ability, but more so for his potential as a professional. The “Big Mon” as he is called, had limited football experience before arriving at Morehouse, from St. Michael, Barbados, where he excelled in soccer and rugby, yet he had three outstanding seasons as a Maroon Tiger.

There were other current and former Morehouse players on the field – including Achille Hendje, Jamal James, Eddie Rowe and Randall Ward – but it was clear from the start that all eyes were on Harewood's 6'-6” 345-pound frame.

Looming large at the center of questioners and curious onlookers, Harewood was asked about everything from his football skills to his family history. He handled all queries with the same poise and skill he demonstrated on the football field.

Following the interviews, players took part in a skills assessment, which included bench pressing, vertical leaps, standing broad jumps, 40-yard dashes and agility exercises.

After gathering their data, the scouts, who had held a similar event earlier at Georgia Tech, huddled and compared notes. Though they guarded their empirical findings closely, it was evident from their expressions and comments that the well-spoken and well-travelled Harewood was a top-notch pro prospect prospect who could move his playing days from Saturdays to Sundays. Stay tuned.
