April 24, 2010—Morehouse offensive lineman Ramon Harewood was selected in the sixth round of the 2010 National Football League draft by the Baltimore Ravens, with the 194th overall pick.
Harewood, who hails from St. Michael, Barbados, is a 345-pound, 6'- 6” senior physics major, who boasts a 3.8 grade point average.
The “Big Mon,” as he is called, was selected three times to the all-conference team of the Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference. He anchored a Morehouse line that became one of the best in the conference. His stellar play helped Morehouse compile a 20-10 record in three years.
What is remarkable about his accomplishment is that Harewood played no football, before arriving at Morehouse. Instead he played soccer, rugby and cricket. He becomes the first player drafted into the NFL from his tiny Caribbean nation.
"We are very proud of our scholar-athlete and of the terrific coaches and program that essentially created a professional football player and future star from an inexperienced but eager and intelligent student," said Morehouse President, Dr. Robert M. Franklin. "This is Morehouse at its best. Brother Harewood is the classic gentle giant with a keen intellect and manners of a Morehouse Renaissance man."
Much of Harewood's athletic success can be attributed to the Morehouse coaching staff. After arriving at Morehouse, the Big Mon came under the tutelage of offensive line coach Brian Braswell, a former lineman at Hampton University.
Harewood becomes only the first Morehouse player to be drafted into the NFL since Alex Percival and William Montgomery were drafted by the Cincinnati Bengals in mid-1970.
