JACKSON, Tenn. — Morehouse College put together its most complete performance of the young season Saturday afternoon, shutting out Lane College, 44-0, at Lane Field to earn its first victory of the 2026 season and the first win of the Brad Sherrod era.
The Maroon Tigers controlled the game in all three phases, rushing for 190 yards, forcing five turnovers and holding Lane to just 184 yards of total offense. Morehouse intercepted four passes, recovered a fumble and scored touchdowns on defense and special teams while keeping the Dragons off the scoreboard for all four quarters.
Morehouse improved to 1-3 overall and 1-2 in Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference play, while Lane fell to 0-4 overall and 0-2 in the SIAC.
The shutout was Morehouse's first since defeating Clark Atlanta 40-0 in 2017. The Maroon Tigers' 44-point margin was also their largest since a 51-3 victory over Fort Valley State in 2021.
First Quarter
Morehouse established control midway through the opening quarter.
The Maroon Tigers marched 54 yards on seven plays before Savion Red capped the possession with a 10-yard touchdown run with 7:42 remaining. Davis Rowe converted the extra point to give Morehouse a 7-0 advantage.
The defense kept Lane from answering, beginning what would become a full afternoon of frustration for the Dragons' offense.
Second Quarter
Morehouse leaned on its running game and possession offense during the second quarter.
The Maroon Tigers put together one of their longest drives of the season, moving 79 yards on 14 plays and taking eight minutes off the clock. Red finished the drive with his second touchdown of the afternoon, scoring from three yards out with 4:38 remaining.
Rowe's extra point extended the lead to 14-0.
Lane had an opportunity to get on the scoreboard earlier in the quarter, but Noah Hernandez missed a 38-yard field goal.
Morehouse carried its 14-0 advantage into halftime after holding the Dragons scoreless through the opening 30 minutes.
Third Quarter
Morehouse added to its lead after halftime while the defense continued to control the game.
Rowe connected on a 25-yard field goal with 8:34 remaining in the third quarter, completing an eight-play, 30-yard drive and pushing the Maroon Tigers' advantage to 17-0.
Lane continued to struggle against a Morehouse defense that consistently created negative plays and forced the Dragons into difficult passing situations.
The Maroon Tigers entered the fourth quarter holding a three-score advantage.
Fourth Quarter
Morehouse broke the game open with a 27-point fourth quarter fueled by offense, defense and special teams.
After Lane had a 30-yard field goal attempt blocked, Morehouse extended its lead with 8:44 remaining when Miles Scott connected with Noah Rhodes for an eight-yard touchdown. The score gave Morehouse a 23-0 lead.
Just 12 seconds later, freshman linebacker Jordan Woods intercepted a Lane pass and returned it 21 yards for a touchdown. Rowe added the extra point to make it 30-0.
The Maroon Tigers continued to pour it on late.
Chase DeVaughn broke loose for a 55-yard touchdown run with 1:48 remaining, capping a 79-yard drive and giving Morehouse a 37-0 advantage.
Freshman Ayden Williams then put the finishing touch on the victory, returning a punt 30 yards for a touchdown with 24 seconds remaining.
Rowe's extra point produced the final margin, 44-0.
