Morehouse Athletics Caps Historic 2025-26 Year With Championships, Milestones and Breakthrough Seasons

ATLANTA, GA | Morehouse Athletics delivered its most successful athletic year since 1991 during the 2025-26 season, a historic campaign highlighted by four SIAC championships, a men's basketball return to the NCAA Tournament, a breakthrough baseball season, continued growth in football and another strong showing by the golf program.

Fueled by championship performances in cross country, indoor track and field, outdoor track and field and men's basketball, the Maroon Tigers established a new standard of competitive excellence across the department while producing major individual honors, national qualifiers and milestone achievements throughout the year.

The 2025-26 season stands as the strongest all-around year for Morehouse Athletics in more than three decades. The last comparable championship run came in 1991, when Morehouse shared the conference championship in football, won both the basketball regular season and tournament titles, and captured championships in cross country, tennis and track and field.

Harold Ellis"Historic years are not built by one team, one coach or one moment," said Morehouse Director of Athletics Harold Ellis. "They are built by a department-wide commitment to excellence, by student-athletes who believe in the standard of this institution and by coaches and staff who work every day to move Morehouse Athletics forward. To win championships in the fall, winter and spring, return men's basketball to the NCAA Tournament, to see baseball make history, to see the improvements in golf and football, and to continue to elevate our national profile is a tremendous reflection of where this department is headed. This year showed what is possible when Men of Morehouse compete with purpose, pride and belief in one another."

Ellis added that the success of the 2025-26 year should serve as a call to action for those who believe in the future of Maroon Tiger athletics.

"Now is the time for alumni, supporters and friends of Morehouse Athletics to invest in the future of this program," Ellis said. "If we are going to sustain the success this year has brought, we must continue to build the resources, facilities, support systems and opportunities that allow our student-athletes and coaches to compete at a championship level. This is a moment for the Morehouse community to come together and help carry Maroon Tiger athletics into its next era."

Championship Standard Set By Cross Country, Track and Field

2025 XC CHAMPIONSHIP    SIAC Indoor    2026 Track Championship
The foundation of the year was built by Morehouse's cross country and track and field programs, which completed one of the most dominant runs in SIAC history.

The Maroon Tigers opened the championship haul by capturing the SIAC Men's Cross Country Championship for the fourth consecutive season, scoring 26 points to continue the program's conference dominance. Brian Kemei won the individual conference title and was named SIAC Runner of the Year for the third straight season, while head coach Willie Hill earned SIAC Coach of the Year honors.

The success continued during the indoor season as Morehouse repeated as SIAC Men's Indoor Track and Field champion with 149 points. Victor Chebii was named SIAC Men's Track Performer of the Year, and Hill added another SIAC Coach of the Year honor to his decorated career.

Morehouse completed the sweep during the outdoor season, winning the SIAC Outdoor Track and Field Championship with 176 points. The title secured the first SIAC "track triple crown" by sweeping cross country, indoor track and outdoor track championships in the same academic year. The outdoor championship also marked the 51st SIAC championship in track or cross country for Hill.

The Maroon Tigers produced major scoring efforts and All-SIAC performances across several event groups, with Michael Simmons Jr., Owynn Brown, Dennis Kibet, Keonte Knight, Blake Pollock, Logan McCormick, Sidney Morris, Elijah Rose, Khalil Johnson and Trawick Warren among the standouts.

Men's Basketball Returns To The National Stage

ChampionshipMorehouse men's basketball added another championship chapter under first-year head coach Larry Dixon.

The Maroon Tigers captured the SIAC East Division regular season title, entered the SIAC Tournament as the East Division's No. 1 seed and defeated Tuskegee, 66-56, to win the SIAC Men's Basketball Tournament championship. The title was Morehouse's seventh SIAC Tournament championship, its first since 2003 and secured the program's first NCAA Division II Tournament appearance since 2018.

Dixon's debut season was historic. Morehouse finished with 22 wins, the most victories ever by a Morehouse head coach in his first season. Dixon was later named HBCU All-Stars Clarence "Big House" Gaines Division II Co-National Coach of the Year.

The Maroon Tigers also collected several postseason honors. Josiah Lawson was named SIAC Tournament MVP, while Brandon Peters and JerMontae Hill earned All-Tournament Team recognition. Hill was also named Third Team All-SIAC and HBCU All-Stars Division II Co-National Player of the Year. Sincere Moore earned Second Team All-SIAC honors, and Jared White was selected to the SIAC All-Freshman Team.

Tripp Braswell was named SIAC Freshman of the Year, while Elijah Pinckney earned the SIAC Elite 16 Award and Second Team All-SIAC recognition at shortstop. Elijah James, Robert Robinson Jr. and Cam Simmons also earned all-conference honors.

The program will look to continue to make strides under new head coach, Brad Sherrod.

Golf Continues Upward Climb

Savannah Invitational 2ndUnder Coach Edgar Evans, the Morehouse golf program continued its growth with one of its strongest seasons in recent memory.

The Maroon Tigers finished second at the Savannah State Tigers Spring Invitational, where J.D. Cunningham captured the individual title in a playoff and Tyler Stackhouse tied for first before the playoff round. Morehouse later finished third at the SIAC Championship and earned a berth to the PGA WORKS Collegiate Championship.

At the national event, Morehouse finished as the top HBCU program in the Division II bracket, adding another milestone to a year filled with department-wide success.

Year In Review

The 2025-26 season marked a championship year for Morehouse Athletics across all three athletic seasons — fall, winter and spring — and stands as the department's most successful all-around campaign since 1991. The program has come full circle. Current athletic director, Harold Ellis, was a star on the 1991 basketball team. That year, Morehouse shared the conference championship in football, won the basketball regular season and tournament titles, and captured championships in cross country, tennis and track and field.

More than three decades later, the Maroon Tigers once again delivered a department-wide championship year. From cross country's continued dominance, to basketball's return to the NCAA Tournament, to track and field's triple crown, to baseball's breakthrough and golf's national-stage performance, Morehouse produced one of the strongest seasons in the modern history of Maroon Tiger athletics.

Morehouse Athletics will look to build on that momentum entering the 2026-27 athletic year, with a renewed focus on sustaining championship success, strengthening resources and continuing to elevate the student-athlete experience across every program.
