Ellis Highlights Morehouse Athletics’ Rise on Dr. Cavil’s Inside the HBCU Sports Lab Following Back-to-Back Commissioner’s Cup Honor

Ellis was a guest on the Thursday, June 4 edition of the podcast on the Black College Sports Network

ATLANTA, GA | Morehouse College Director of Athletics Harold Ellis joined Dr. Cavil's Inside the HBCU Sports Lab on the Black College Sports Network on Thursday evening, just hours after Morehouse Athletics announced it had captured its second consecutive SIAC Men's Commissioner's Cup.

The SIAC Commissioner's Cup, one of the league's most prestigious all-sports awards, is presented annually to the conference's top-performing athletic department in league competition. The honor recognizes programs that demonstrate sustained excellence across sports, competitive consistency, and championship-level performance throughout the academic year.

For Morehouse, the back-to-back honor capped one of the most successful athletic years in school history.

During the interview, Ellis reflected on the department's growth, the expectations surrounding Morehouse Athletics, and the championship standard that has been established across the Maroon Tigers' programs.

"This year, man, we had one of the most historic seasons in school history, if not conference history," Ellis said during the appearance. "It's not about me. I have an incredible staff. We have a small crew, but our staff is incredible — from the coaches to the sports marketing manager (A.D. Drew) to the executive assistant (Renee Wilson)."

The Commissioner's Cup honor came after a historic 2025-26 campaign that included SIAC championships in men's cross country, men's basketball, men's indoor track and field, and men's outdoor track and field. Morehouse also added strong conference finishes in baseball and golf, strengthening its overall point total and reinforcing the department's rise across the SIAC.

Ellis, a Morehouse alumnus and former professional basketball player, said the recent success is part of a larger vision to return the Maroon Tigers to consistent championship contention.

"My three-year plan was originally a five-year plan," Ellis said. "We just got there in three years. We're at the top of the conference. Now I want us to be national. We have a national brand. I want to go to the NCAA tournament. I want to go to the football playoffs. I want us to compete nationally on the field and in the classroom."

Ellis also credited the support of Morehouse College President Dr. F. DuBois Bowman, the Board of Trustees, alumni, coaches, staff, student-athletes, and supporters for helping create the momentum behind the department's success.

"We have a great president, and we have great alumni," Ellis said. "We're rolling. Athletics is rising at Morehouse."

The interview also highlighted the department's growth beyond competition, including expanded storytelling, increased social media visibility, live-streaming growth through the SIAC Network, new marketing partnerships, and the continued emphasis on promoting Morehouse student-athletes at a championship level.

Ellis emphasized that while the Commissioner's Cup is a major achievement, Morehouse does not plan to slow down.

"People take the Commissioner's Cup for granted," Ellis said. "People think we should win everything — and that's what I feel. But this year we had at Morehouse College is a year that might never happen again. When July 1 hits, we're going to start a new season, and we're going to try to top the year we had this year."

Ellis also discussed the department's future, including a continued push to strengthen schedules, create larger platforms for Morehouse Athletics, and expand the Maroon Tiger brand nationally.

The appearance on Inside the HBCU Sports Lab provided another platform for Morehouse to celebrate a historic year while making clear that the department's ambitions extend beyond conference success.

With back-to-back SIAC Commissioner's Cup trophies secured, Morehouse Athletics enters the next year with momentum, confidence, and a clear standard.

The Maroon Tigers are no longer chasing the top of the SIAC.

They are defending it. For up-to-date athletic information on the Maroon Tigers, follow them on social media or online at www.morehouseathletics.com
