Atlanta, Ga. | Morehouse College Athletics will bring its student-athletes together for Morehouse 360 "The Launch Pad", a comprehensive student-athlete transition and development seminar, on Tuesday, August 18, from 9 a.m. to noon inside Forbes Arena.
Designed as a proactive investment in the development of the Men of Morehouse, the mandatory seminar will prepare student-athletes for the professional, financial and personal responsibilities that accompany collegiate athletics, increased public visibility and the transition into life beyond competition.
Morehouse 360 "The Launch Pad" will center around four key pillars: financial literacy, mental health and wellness, professional conduct, and career longevity.
"This is about looking at the entire student-athlete experience and asking ourselves what our young men need in order to be successful, not just while they are wearing a Morehouse uniform, but five, 10 and 20 years from now," Morehouse Director of Athletics Harold Ellis said. "Athletics gives our young men a platform and creates opportunities, but we also have a responsibility to prepare them for everything that comes with those opportunities. Morehouse 360 "The Launch Pad" allows us to bring those conversations together in one place and give our student-athletes tools they can carry with them long after their playing days are over."
The program is designed to meet student-athletes at an important stage in their development, when decisions involving finances, relationships, college sports betting, personal conduct, social media, career preparation and overall wellness can have a lasting impact.
Preparing for Opportunity
The landscape of college athletics continues to evolve. Student-athletes today may encounter opportunities involving Name, Image and Likeness (NIL), personal branding, entrepreneurship and increased media exposure while still balancing the demands of academics, athletics and personal development.
Morehouse 360 "The Launch Pad" is intended to help student-athletes understand that increased opportunity also brings increased responsibility.
The seminar will address professional expectations and conduct, institutional policies, relationships, financial decision-making, media and social media presence, and personal wellness. The goal is to provide student-athletes with practical tools they can apply immediately while encouraging them to think long-term about their futures.
Four Pillars of Morehouse 360
Financial Literacy
Student-athletes will be introduced to concepts designed to help them better understand money management, budgeting, financial planning and the responsibilities that may accompany NIL income and other financial opportunities.
Mental Health and Wellness
Morehouse 360 "The Launch Pad" will emphasize the importance of physical, mental and emotional wellness while encouraging student-athletes to understand the resources available to them and the importance of maintaining balance amid the demands of college athletics.
Professional Conduct
From social media and public appearances to relationships and everyday decision-making, student-athletes will examine how their actions can affect their personal reputation, their teams and Morehouse College. The seminar will reinforce the responsibility that comes with representing the institution both on and off the field of competition.
Career Longevity
While professional athletics may be a goal for some participants, Morehouse 360 "The Launch Pad" will encourage every student-athlete to prepare for a career and life that extends beyond competitive sports. Career planning, networking, personal branding and professional development will be emphasized as parts of a long-term approach to success.
Extending the Morehouse Mission
Morehouse 360 "The Launch Pad" also aligns with the broader mission of Morehouse College to develop men with disciplined minds who will lead lives of leadership and service. President F. DuBois Bowman '92 has emphasized an institutional approach in which excellence, equity and service are inseparable and has spoken about preparing Morehouse students to leave the College ready to compete, demonstrate their value and positively impact society.
"President Bowman continues to challenge us to think about how everything we do contributes to the development of principled leaders who are prepared to serve and make an impact," Ellis said. "That is at the heart of the Morehouse mission, and athletics has an important role in carrying that mission forward. Our student-athletes should leave here with more than statistics, championships and memories. They should leave Morehouse with disciplined minds, prepared to lead, equipped to serve and ready to make a difference in whatever space they enter. Morehouse 360 is one way we can intentionally support that development."
Bowman, a 1992 Morehouse graduate and the College's 13th president, has described his own Morehouse experience as one that anchored his commitment to lead with purpose and serve with integrity. He has also emphasized Morehouse's responsibility to cultivate talent capable of making a positive impact in the workforce and society.
A 360-Degree Approach to Development
Morehouse 360 "The Launch Pad" reflects the department's commitment to developing the complete student-athlete.
The program is a proactive, developmentally timed initiative that recognizes the transition from college athletics into adulthood does not begin when eligibility expires. That preparation begins while student-athletes are still on campus.
By bringing together discussions of policy, professionalism, relationships, finance, media presence and wellness, Morehouse Athletics seeks to equip its student-athletes not only for the possibility of professional competition, but also for the broader launch into adulthood, career and public life that every Morehouse Man ultimately faces.
The August 18 seminar is mandatory for all Morehouse student-athletes. Morehouse 360 "The Launch Pad" represents a 360-degree approach to the student-athlete experience, preparing the Men of Morehouse to compete today, lead tomorrow and successfully navigate the opportunities and responsibilities that come long after the final whistle.
