The Maroon Tigers departed for the Bay Area early on Thursday, February 13, accompanied by Head Coach Douglas Whittler and assistant coaches Terrell Polk, Bo Bivens, and Douglas Augusta. Reflecting on the experience of arriving in San Francisco, Sports Information Director and Marketing Manager Ako Drew shared, "We are here to play." In addition to the team and coaching staff, Morehouse's basketball creative director, Juwan Lee, and two student sports journalists, Jiana Kai and Laila Surafiel, also attended, providing journalistic and content coverage of the event.
A Grand Welcome
Upon arrival, it was evident that the NBA had orchestrated a full-scale production for the teams. After landing, the Maroon Tigers immediately hit the court for a practice session before heading to the luxurious Westin St. Francis for their stay. That evening, the team attended a heartfelt welcome event in collaboration with Foot Locker. Morehouse and Tuskegee were formally introduced, followed by expressions of gratitude from both head coaches, Morehouse's Douglas Whittler and Tuskegee's Benjy Taylor, who praised the NBA for providing a platform to showcase HBCU talent. The event featured a special address by former NBA player Channing Frye, who shared words of wisdom and encouragement for the upcoming game.
Celebrating Founders' Day and Community Service
Friday, February 14, was a significant day for Morehouse, as it coincided with both Founders' Day and Valentine's Day. The team had the unique opportunity to train at the legendary Olympic Club, a facility used by visiting NBA teams when playing the Golden State Warriors. Later that day, the players participated in a service event with NBA Cares and Jr. NBA, engaging with local youth through training and mentorship. Head Coach Whittler emphasized the importance of giving back, stating, "I always tell my guys it is crucial to support the communities that pour into us."
That evening, the team attended the NBA Rising Stars game at the Chase Center, where they were honored on the court for their participation in All-Star Weekend.
Game Day: The NBA HBCU Classic
Saturday, February 15, marked the highly anticipated NBA HBCU Classic. Before the game, Morehouse players had the opportunity to witness an All-Star open practice at the Oakland Arena, where NBA superstars interacted with fans and young athletes. Shai Gilgeous-Alexander visited the Morehouse locker room, offering words of encouragement: "Play to win. Play to be great. Do not take shortcuts." As a gesture of support, he gifted Head Coach Douglas Whittler a custom All-Star Morehouse jersey.
At 2 PM, the Maroon Tigers faced off against the Tuskegee Golden Tigers in a spirited match-up. The game drew a star-studded audience, with Morehouse alum Spike Lee, Jennifer Hudson, and Common among the notable attendees. The HBCU community showed up in full force, with fans donning various shades of maroon in support of their team. Despite Morehouse falling short in the contest, the overwhelming display of school pride and camaraderie made the experience unforgettable.
Following the game, the team attended their second All-Star event of the weekend at the Chase Center, where rising G-League star Mac McClung electrified the crowd by winning the Dunk Contest with an impressive dunk over a car.
