Lawson, McCormick Power Morehouse’s Second-Half Surge Past Spring Hill

Maroon Tigers open 2-0 in SIAC play

MOBILE, AL | Morehouse turned a sluggish start into a road rout Saturday afternoon, storming back from a 15-point first-half hole and a four-point halftime deficit to bury Spring Hill 83–60 in SIAC play at the Arthur R. Outlaw Recreation Center. The Maroon Tigers outscored the Badgers 52–25 after the break to improve to 2–2 overall and 2–0 in the SIAC, while Spring Hill fell to 0–3, 0–1 in league play.

First Half – Maroon Tigers Claw Back

Spring Hill dictated the early tempo, jumping out to an 11–4 lead behind Amaan Sanni's slashing and perimeter shooting as the Tigers struggled to find a rhythm on either end.

The Badgers continued to attack downhill and space the floor, pushing their advantage to 27–12 on a Rocco Lamuno fast-break layup with 9:15 left in the half, their largest lead of the afternoon.

From there, the game flipped. Morehouse's bench, particularly forward Josiah Lawson and guard Sincere Moore, changed the energy with defensive pressure and transition opportunities. Lawson got going with a mid-range jumper and a fast-break layup to steady the offense, while Logan McCormick began to establish himself on the interior.

Caleb Thompson's free throws and McCormick's three-point play trimmed the deficit, and as the Maroon Tigers tightened their defense, Spring Hill's clean looks became harder to find.

Over the final nine minutes of the half, Morehouse closed on a 19–8 run, turning that 27–12 deficit into a manageable 35–31 score at the break. Lawson was central to the surge, scoring twice in the final 90 seconds, including a late layup that brought the Maroon Tigers within four. Guard Brandon Peters added two clutch free throws in the closing seconds as Morehouse carried momentum into the locker room despite shooting just 9-for-32 from the field in the opening 20 minutes.

Second Half – 10–0 Haymaker and a Knockout Run

Morehouse wasted no time seizing control after halftime. Robert Brazelton started the second half with a pull-up jumper to cut the deficit to two. On the next trip, Sincere Moore blocked a three-point attempt, pushed the ball, and found Thompson for a soaring fast-break dunk to tie the game at 35–35.

McCormick then went to work, scoring on a driving layup and a transition dunk, and Moore capped a 10–0 burst with a leak-out layup that gave the Maroon Tigers a 41–35 lead less than five minutes into the half.

Spring Hill briefly answered with an Alvin Cole three-pointer to trim the margin to three, but Peters immediately responded with a three of his own from the left wing. Brazelton converted a transition layup, and Lawson drilled a wing triple to push the cushion to nine as Morehouse turned stops into easy offense.

The middle of the half featured the knockout stretch. Leading 46–40, the Maroon Tigers ripped off 12 straight points over just more than three minutes, with Lawson burying another three and a jumper, Moore finishing at the rim, Jared White knocking down four free throws, and Thompson racing in for a layup. That explosion stretched the lead to 58–40 and effectively put the game out of reach.

Morehouse never let up. Even after Spring Hill briefly cut the deficit under 20, Lawson's hot hand delivered again late, as he buried back-to-back threes and added a jumper in the lane. Sincere Key's driving layup pushed the lead to 80–50—Morehouse's largest margin of the night—before a late Spring Hill flurry trimmed the final score to 83–60. The Maroon Tigers' defense was equally impressive in the second half, holding the Badgers to just 25 points, with no second-chance points and only eight in the paint after the break.

With the victory, Morehouse not only stayed unbeaten in SIAC play but also proved it can take a punch on the road and answer with sustained runs at both ends of the floor. The Maroon Tigers now get more than a week to recover before continuing their early-season road grind at Tuskegee on Monday, Dec. 1, at the Chappie James Center. Seven of Morehouse's first eight regular-season contests—and five of its first six conference games—come away from Forbes Arena, making Saturday's come-from-behind win in Mobile an important confidence boost for a team living out of a suitcase to start the year. For up-to-date athletic information on the Maroon Tigers, follow them on social media or online at www.morehouseathletics.com or Maroon Tiger basketball on Instagram @morehousebasketball.
