Damion Mitchell tallied 14 as Morehouse defeated Edward Waters, 70-64, on Friday night inside of Tiger Arena to advance to the semifinal round of the SIAC Basketball Championship, presented by Cricket.
A big first half was the difference in the game for the Maroon Tigers. Morehouse shot 40.7 percent (11-for-27) from the field and 35.7 percent (5-for-14) from three, through the first 20 minutes on its way to 39 points. They also held Edward Waters to 31 points in the process, leading at the half.
Morehouse got out to a quick 6-0 lead early in the first, however Edward Waters woke up soon after, tying the game at 9-9. Both teams battled throughout the half that saw six ties and six lead changes in the first 20 minutes, yet Morehouse led for more than 12 minutes of play.
The second half was a similar story as the game remained close, with neither side getting much separation, despite Edward Waters not leading at any point in the half. Morehouse stretched its lead to double figures for the first time at 62-52 with 3:37 to go.
However, EWU continued to claw back, getting within single digits not long after, but could not fully complete the comeback, with the 70-64 final.
Demetrius Calip II was the third Maroon Tiger in double figures with 10 points and six assists as Morehouse finished the game shooting 38.2 percent from the field, making just six of their 25 three-point attempts and 22 of their 30 free throws attempts.
EWU had two players in double figures, led by Jeremiah Kwarteng who had 16 points, followed by Kristian Ford who had 15 points and seven rebounds on the night.
