ATLANTA, Ga. – Morehouse returned to their home field this Saturday afternoon to play against Savannah State, after returning from a tough loss against Howard University in the HBCU NY Classic. Morehouse would start the game off by scoring the first 3 points, but Savannah State took the lead, 15-3.
The Savannah State and Morehouse defenses battled in the opening quarter, keeping the chains in the middle of the field. Both teams had three drives each for no score in the first quarter.
Morehouse was the first to strike. Late in their fourth possession of the game, and first of the second quarter, Morehouse's
Derrach West connected with
Dallas Johnson for a 13-yard pass completion to set up first and goal on Savannah State's 3-yard line.
The Maroon Tigers settled for the 25-yard field goal and a 3-0 lead at the 4:17 mark.
Savannah State opened the second half with the ball. After a big first down, they got pushed back on a costly penalty. Facing 1st and 20 from their own 35, Adams rushed for four yards, then on second down and long connected with Da'Shun Mitchell on a 16-yard pass down the middle to pick up a first down.
Later in the drive, on 2nd and 11, Adams hit Brent Carr with a 20-yard touchdown strike. Tome missed the extra point as Savannah State went up 13-3.
Following a missed Savannah State field goal attempt from Jorge Gonzalez, Morehouse got backed up deep into Savannah State territory on a personal foul.
Derrach West looked to throw from the end zone, but Savannah State's Kelvin Drummond found him instead for a sack and the safety. The final points of the game lifted the Tigers to a 15-3 lead.
The Maroon Tigers will be on the road next weekend as they travel to Jacksonville, FL to take on Edward Waters on Saturday, Oct 1 at 2pm.
