Morehouse Closes out Brewer-Mcafe Memorial Classic with a Win

Atlanta, GA- Morehouse College defeated Fisk University 53 -51 to close out the Brewer-Mcafe Memorial Classic.  The game was closely contested from the jump ball as both teams' largest leads were seven. Fisk would end the half up seven behind Fisk guard Ralph Davenport's five three-pointers in the first half.

Morehouse then relied on their defense and playing small ball to bring them back in the second half getting timely steals and finishing on the other end.  Morehouse guard Christian Lamar would hold Fisk's Davenport to two points in the second half getting four steals and four points in the process. On the offensive end, Elijah Stewart's craftiness enabled him to get to the line and get some layups as well.

Elijah Stewart led Morehouse in scoring with 16 points, two blocks, and two steals this evening. Morehouse head coach Douglass Whittler had this to say after Morehouse's win over Fisk.

'' Today we came out a little lethargic I thought, we were sluggish looking, Whittler said. "We couldn't hit any shots, we were missing layups, just wasn't being tough, but the biggest thing is we came out with the win, the guys persevered and we won the game."

Overall, the Maroon Tigers finished 1-1 in the Memorial Classic. On the overall performance of his team, Whittler said, "We came out .500 and that's not what we wanted to do. We would've loved to get both wins, but we didn't. We played decent ball yesterday, we fought, and we competed."

The Maroon Tigers have two away games versus Tuskegee University at on Saturday, December 11 at 8pm and Monday, December 13 against Springhill College at 4p. Ahead of these two matchups, coach Whittler expects his team to go undefeated.   "I see us winning every game that's how I look at it, I prepare to win every game, we got to be disciplined that's first, we have to communicate defensively, we got to make sure that we rotate properly, rebound, can't turn the ball over, we got to make our free throws, all the fundamental things that take to win the game that's what we have to do."
