ATLANTA, Ga. – Morehouse College won the first game of the 2
nd Annual Arthur J. McAfee, Jr. Memorial Classic as they defeated Saint Augustine's University, 61-51, on Saturday afternoon in Forbes Arena.
The Maroon Tigers improved to 5-3, 2-0 SIAC while the Falcons fell to 2-3, 0-1 CIAA.
Both teams didn't shoot particularly well in the first half and MHC went into the locker rooms with a 29-24 lead. Morehouse did get steady play from
Malik Kennedy (Toronto Ontario, CAN),
Xavier Brewer (Atlanta, GA), and
Devin Russell (Center Point, AL) as each finished with seven points-a-piece in the first stanza.
Kennedy continued to pace the Maroon Tigers in the second half as he scored 10 of his game-high 17 points. SAU battled back to tie the game but MHC held on down the stretch for the win.
Turning Point
The Falcons battled back to tie the game at 41-41 with 11:56 remaining but Morehouse turned up the defensive intensity the rest of the way going on a 20-to-10 run to close out the game and the victory.
Individual Leaders
Morehouse was led by Kennedy who finished with a game-high 17 points while Brewer ended the day with 12 points and three rebounds. Russell came off the bench to finish with 11 points and six rebounds. Senior
Robert Andrews (Detroit, MI) saw his first action of the season and finished with seven points and seven rebounds in the win.
Saint Augustine's was led by Marquie Clemonts who had 13 points and Miquel Brown who finished with a double-double 10 points and 13 rebounds.

Tipoff is set for 4 p.m. or 20 minutes following the first classic game of the day between LeMoyne-Owen College and Saint Augustine's.
