The Maroon Tigers survived three late scoring attempts and held on to beat the Central State University Marauders, 35-33.
In the highest scoring game this season, all the points came in bunches, as neither team scored in the first or fourth quarter.
The stats were as close as the final score. Morehouse gained 387 yards on 63 plays. Central State gained 383 yards on 67 plays. Morehouse led in first downs 20-17, but CSU out-paced the Tigers with 156 yards of returns on three interceptions, one of them for a touchdown.
Amyr Smith and Kivon Taylor put up big numbers, accounting for three touchdowns and more than 250 yards.
Smith posted 169 All-Purpose yards, with 154 reception yards and a touchdown and a 15-yard kick return.
In spite of three interceptions, Taylor completed 17 passes for 247 yards and two touchdowns. He also rushed for 21 yards and a touchdown.
Ryan Edwards caught six passes for 60 yards and a touchdown.
Filling in for injured running back Brycen Terry, freshman Frank Bailey Jr. had a breakout game, gaining 61 yards on 16 carries and two touchdowns.
The Marauders got on the board first with a 16-yard touchdown pass, which started two quarters of back and forth scoring of 68 points.
Despite the high score, some individual Morehouse defenders had big games for the second straight week. Maroon Tigers pulled down Marauders runners and passers for 13 tackles behind the line, for a loss of 86 yards and five sacks.
Kenneth Hagins had perhaps his best game as a Maroon Tiger, leading all tacklers with 11 stops. The senior linebacker collected 1.5 sacks and led Morehouse in tackles for loss, with 3.5, resulting in 26 yards of loss.
With 10 tackles, Edward Nelson posted his first-ever double-digit tackling game. Team leading tackler David Smith recorded seven tackles.
Keith Anderson, Gary Awkard, Antonio Johnson and Micaiah Paige each had five tackles. Johnson punctuated his defensive performance with four tackles for loss and two sacks, which pushed the offense back 43 yards.
The Maroon Tigers improved to 2-1 and will travel to Birmingham, AL, Saturday, to face the Miles College Golden Bears, at 5 p.m. CDT.
