Box Score 2 April 29, 2017 – BIRMINGHAM, AL – In the final series of the season, the Maroon Tigers got whacked by the Miles College Golden Bears, 15-4, in the first half of a doubleheader, but bounced back to win the second game, 8-7.
In Game One:
The game was practically decided in the first inning, when the Bears jumped on Morehouse starting pitcher Jordan Davis for eight earned runs, off seven hits and two walks.
Morehouse scored a run in the second inning. First baseman Xavier Floyd singled to right field, advanced on a sacrifice bunt by designated hitter Derrick Lewis, and scored on a throwing error by the Bears' catcher.
The Bears exploded again in the third inning, scoring six runs on six hits and two walks.
Floyd got the Tigers on the board again, in the sixth. The senior from Decatur, GA, reached on a single, moved to second on a balk and scored on a Jason Davis double to left field.
Davis was thrown out trying to steal third. Keon Cusic, pinch-hitting for right fielder Michael Broadus, hit a triple and scored on an error, for the Tigers' second run in the inning. The error by the third baseman came off the bat of Vanard Williams, who was pinch hitting for Christian Watts.
Miles tacked on a run in their half of the sixth, on a solo homer, by the shortstop.
Morehouse added an unearned run in the seventh. Amyr Smith reached on a bunt single, moved to second on a passed ball and scored on a single by Jared Maner, who was called out in a rundown at second base.
The Tigers pounded out 11 hits but stranded six baserunners. Amyr Smith collected three hits on four trips to the plate, Jason Davis went 2-of-3 and Werten Bellamy had a single, in two attempts.
Pitcher Jordan Davis took the loss and fell to 2-3.
In Game Two:
After the drubbing in game one, Morehouse came out swinging hot bats in game two, scoring in every inning except the fifth and seventh. The Tigers put up two runs in the first, second and fourth innings and one each in the third and sixth.
The Tigers out-hit the Bears 10-6 and committed only one error.
Jason Davis started on the mound for Morehouse and went two-and-a-third innings, before giving way to Kristopher Skinner. In the inning, Davis walked four batters and left with the bases loaded. Skinner, who had started the game at third base, struck out the next two batters, to end the inning.
Davis moved to center field and finished with a single and run scored. Skinner went the rest of the way, giving up five runs, on six hits, and earning his first win of the season.
Bryan Armstead went 3-of-4 from the plate. His sixth-inning single to left field drove in Amyr Smith from second, for what became the winning run. Smith had a hit in three plate appearances and reached base twice on errors. He scored two runs.
Zachary Lowe was 2-of-4 on the day, with two RBIs and a run scored. Lowe's His single to right field, in the second inning, drove in Kristopher Skinner and Smith, who had singled ahead of him.
Jared Maner, who doubled to right center field, driving in Lowe, scored on a wild pitch, to make the score 2-0.
After falling behind 5-0, the Bears rallied with two runs in the third inning, one in the fifth and four in the sixth.
Morehouse improved to 8-29; 5-14. Miles slipped to 27-17; 15-5.
