Dodd Pitches Gem, Maroon Tigers Roll

Box Score March 25, 2017 -- NORTH CHARLESTON, SC -- In the best game of his Morehouse career, Anthony Dodd pitched a nine-inning complete-game gem and led the Maroon Tigers to a 6-1 win over the Claflin University Panthers.

Dodd's performance was one of the best games by a Morehouse pitcher since the College re-instated baseball in 2003. Since that time, no Morehouse pitcher has gone a full nine innings. In control the entire game, the 6'-2" right-hander walked four and struck out seven batters, on the way to his first win of the season against three losses.

Dodd, a junior from Tyrone, GA, allowed only six hits and no earned runs. The only run against him came in the fifth inning, when Claflin mounted a brief rally. But, the threat was quickly erased by two terrific defensive plays. Catcher Jordan Davis threw out a would be base-stealer, then shortly thereafter first baseman Xavier Floyd fielded a hard-hit grounder, stepped on the bag and fired the ball to Davis who applied the tag for the third out.

Kristopher Skinner, normally a pitcher who was playing at third base, also made a stellar defensive play, to quell a rally, when he fielded a high chopper and fired to first, barely catching the speedy baserunner. Skinner also had two hits and a run scored.

In addition to outstanding defense, the Maroon Tigers provided more than enough run support for the second conference win of the season. The Tigers scored six earned runs on nine hits and eight walks.

Left fielder Jared Maner went 2-of-4 and scored two runs and shortstop Amyr Smith picked up to hits on four trips to the plate, with a run scored.

Floyd drove in two runs with a single and second baseman Derrick Lewis had two runs batted in. Designated hitter Kaelan Ashford-Jones and right fielder Michael Broadus each had a hit and an RBI.
