Box Score October 7, 2017 – COLUMBUS, GA – In a game in which they never trailed until the final play in overtime, the Maroon Tigers lost 23-17 to the Tuskegee Golden Tigers.
After scoring on their first possession, the Maroon Tigers maintained the lead until a field goal tied the score with no time on the clock. In overtime, Morehouse failed to score when a Kivon Taylor pass was intercepted. When the Golden Tigers took their overtime possession, they ran it in from the one-yard line and won for the sixth straight time, at the Tuskegee-Morehouse Classic.
Morehouse's first score came on a bit of "trickeration." Quarterback Kivon Taylor took the snap, passed the ball backwards and across the field to Ricci Nuckles, who passed it to a wide open Tamarick Vanover, for a 17-yard touchdown. Fernando Sdelamora tacked on the extra point, for a 7-0 Morehouse lead. That scoring play was set up by a fumble recovery by Kamari Jones-Hunter.
Early in the second quarter, Tuskegee tied the score on a seven-yard touchdown run by Hoderick Lowe.
Three minutes later, Sdelarmora kicked a 30-yard field goal, for a 10-7 Morehouse lead.
With less than a minute left in the first half, Taylor ran into the end zone, from the nine-yard line. The score capped a 14-play, 83-yard drive and gave Morehouse a 17-7 halftime lead.
Neither team scored in the third quarter. In the fourth, with 9:43 left, Phillip Brown ran it in from the three-yard line, to make the score 17-14.
On their next possession, the Maroon Tigers gained 25 yards and two first downs, but could move the ball no further and were forced to punt. However, the snap sailed over the head of punter Alex Gonzalez. Retrieving the ball under heavy pressure, Gonzalez was able to kick it off the side of his left foot. The ball never made it back to the line of scrimmage and gave Tuskegee excellent field possession, at the Morehouse 31.
Two plays later, freshman Cameron Miller bailed Morehouse out of a deep hole, with his first interception of the season. The pick and a Tuskegee tripping penalty gave the Maroon Tigers the ball at their own 30-yard line.
Once again Morehouse failed to sustain a drive and punted the ball away. The Golden Tigers took over, on their 30-yard line, with 1:07 on the clock.
After gaining two first downs, Tuskegee made their biggest play of the game -- a 45-yard pass completion to the Morehouse six-yard line. With only seconds on the clock, the Golden Tigers kicked a 23-yard field, to tie the score at 17-all, as time expired.
Morehouse won the toss and chose to take the ball first. Two completions took the ball to the 10-yard line, but Taylor's next pass was intercepted.
Tuskegee took over, ran the ball twice and punched in from the one-yard line, to end the game.
Morehouse fell to 3-3; 1-1 and will face the Albany State Golden Rams, Saturday, at their Homecoming. Tuskegee improved to 4-2; 3-0.
